Like many organizations, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The asthma and allergy community has been heavily impacted by several events of 2020:

• The public health emergency and economic recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic
  
  
• Loss of health care or delayed access to medications due to the pandemic
  
  
• Record-breaking wildfires and health impacts related to natural disasters and air pollution
  
  
• Widespread upheaval over racial injustices that have once again shined a light on long-standing health disparities
  
  

All these emergencies have impacted people with asthma and allergies.

Thanks to your generous support, we’ve listened to and acted on behalf of people with asthma and allergies. We’ve used our expertise and platform to provide public health education. We've helped our community stay safe and healthy through these emergencies. We’ve provided around-the-clock emotional, social, and mental health support as people have faced levels of stress and anxiety like never before. We’ve worked with our network of partners, ambassadors, volunteers, and advisors to serve the asthma and allergy community during a period of great uncertainty.

In 2020, you’ve already helped us:

• Release the 2020 Asthma Disparities in America report – a 264-page roadmap that offers strategies to improve asthma health in racial and ethnic minority populations
  
  
• Launch a national program to reduce asthma disparities by strengthening community-based asthma management by working with the Improving Pediatric Asthma Care in the District of Columbia (IMPACT DC) Asthma Clinic at Children’s National Hospital
  
  
• Develop a five-year program to improve asthma care and outcomes for at-risk populations through community health interventions, supported by funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  
  
• Lead efforts to advocate for students with asthma and allergies that resulted in Congress passing the School-Based Allergies and Asthma Management Program Act
  
  
• Continue pressure on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)  and Congress about sesame labeling, as well as on the temporary labeling guidance for COVID-19
  
  
• Release our COVID-19 and Asthma Toolkit for Schools to help schools protect students and staff with asthma while effectively reducing the spread of the coronavirus
  
  
• Supply support to the CDC on COVID-19 and asthma prevention
  
  
• Offer evidence-based information for families managing asthma and food allergies from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic
  
  
• Join with a group of 33 organizations to guide the next administration with a collaborative blueprint that outlines how the president and elected officials can protect people’s health
  
  
• Advocate on behalf of our community to the Department of Transportation (DOT) about emotional support animals on planes
  
  
• Start an asthma program for military members who developed asthma while in service
  
  
• Publish first-of-its-kind research on severe allergic reactions in infants and toddlers with food allergies
  
  
• Advance our asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program, ensuring that more products meet our standards for a healthier home
  
  
• Host educational webinars and live chats with leading asthma and allergy experts, such as doctors from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), members of our Medical Scientific Council, and Dr. Vin Gupta
  
  

AAFA remains committed to responding to questions, providing emotional support, and calming fears and anxiety among the asthma and allergy community – a group that has been a vulnerable population in all the 2020 crises.

This year has been taxing on AAFA, as it has been for many other organizations serving people affected by these events. We’re so grateful for your steadfast support that has allowed us to respond to the urgent and sudden needs of the asthma and allergy community. We’re also lucky to have partners, supporters, staff, and volunteers who stepped up to meet the challenges of 2020.

Despite all the hurdles this year has thrown at us, we’ve worked together to take action.
