As our climate has changed, so has the air we breathe. These changes are affecting people with asthma and increasing asthma rates. And our children are most vulnerable to the negative impacts.
On July 11, 2018, moms and their children will host the fifth annual Play-In for Climate Action. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) will join Moms Clean Air Force on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to support action against climate change. The family-friendly event will have kids’ activities, music and speakers.
What Effects Does Climate Change Have on Asthma?
Climate change is a huge threat to those with respiratory diseases like asthma. Recent studies show air pollution can cause asthma. Hotter temperatures make ground-level ozone worse. This causes airway inflammation and damages lung tissue. Many pollen-producing plants also grow larger and produce more pollen. This makes allergic asthma harder to control.
AAFA supports action against climate change because of its effect on those with asthma and allergies. We are joining the Play-In for Climate Action to fight for climate change and lower asthma rates.
How Can I Join the Efforts?
If you live near Washington, D.C., bring your family to the play-in and help us call for change. We must all work together to create a better environment for those with allergies and asthma. Taking action against climate change can reduce asthma levels and not cause them to increase.
