How can you exercise or participate in sports when you have asthma? Today on World Asthma Day, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and Rashad Jennings of the New York Giants answered that question for the millions of children with asthma in the U.S. by inspiring them to #TackleAsthma!

The educational campaign, at www.TackleAsthma.org, features

  • an Asthma Playbook
  • educational resources and videos
  • experiences shared by children living with asthma

The website also features a documentary of Jennings' personal story. He spent a week fighting for his life after a severe asthma attack when he was 10 and was told he might never be able to play sports.

"An asthma attack feels like your world is about to end. If you’ve ever been swimming, it’s like when you’re underwater and you need to come up to get some air, but you don’t know when you’re going to be able to get it" - Rashad Jennings

School nurses, athletic directors and others are encouraged to share the inspirational videos and the Tackle Asthma Playbook with young athletes and students. It shows young people the steps that are necessary to defend against asthma attacks and stay in a safe, healthy zone.

You can also download an asthma action plan and find out more about exercise and asthma.

In the U.S., asthma affects over 6 million children and nearly 18 million adults. Among children, asthma is the third leading cause of hospitalizations and one of the top causes of school absences.

On Thursday, May 5 at 1 pm ET, join AAFA for a #TackleAsthma Twitter chat. This chat is co-hosted by AAFA (@AAFANational) and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (@AAAAI_org). Experts will answer your questions about exercising with asthma, staying fit and healthy with asthma and more!
