Should You Have Pets If You Have a Pet Allergy?

More than 50% of American homes have a pet. But about 30% of people in the U.S. are allergic to dogs and cats.

Even those many people have a pet allergy, they aren’t willing to give up their pets. In the article “My Cat Allergy Is Killing Me, but Cupcake Stays,” the Wall Street Journal talks about people are keeping their pets even though their dander cause sniffling, sneezing and even asthma symptoms.

If you have a pet allergy, it’s ideal to not have a pet at all. And sadly, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic pet. Some people may be less sensitive to certain dog and cat breeds. But they may react to others. Small animals like hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs can cause allergy symptoms too.

If you have a pet, you can take steps to reduce allergy symptoms. Here are just a few ways to reduce the pet dander in your home:

  • Dust often. Pet dander likes to hang out in dust.
  • Keep your pet out your bedroom.
  • Vacuum at least weekly with a CERTIFIED asthma & allergy friendly® vacuum.
  • Wear a mask when you dust and vacuum or have someone who doesn’t have a pet allergy clean.

No.

You shouldn't.

It is basically abuse to the allergic person.

I have been the allergic person and it got so bad that after chronic exposure even doing all the strategies above and with antihistamines I developed asthma symtoms and shortly after went to the hospital because I thought I was having an asthma atrack turns out it was a heart attack caused by allergic blood cells called eosinophils surrounding my heart and choking it. I was diagnosed with a severe chronic allergic disease. My long time boyfriend and father of my child told me and my son to leave because he wasnt finding a home for the dog and cats even after the doctors explained it was very bad for mevand I should not live with them as it would cause significant health problems. If he would have done to my outsides what he had done to my insides with his bad choices he would be in jail but I had no protections snd thank goodness my parents allowed my son and I to move back with them. I am still recovering both physically and emotionally from the incident and probably will be for life (it was 7 years ago).

Pets are not there to bring harm to family and they are not family-- they are supposed to be friends and should not bring harm to people. If they do, find a home for the pet.
