Do you suffer from hives? This week marks World Allergy Week, and the theme for this year’s event is The Agony of Hives - What to do when welts and swelling do not go away.

The medical name for hives is urticaria. Hives are a common sign of an allergic reaction. Hives can also occur due to other causes, including a viral infection.

Learn more by visiting Hives (Urticaria). Find out when to call your health care provider, and when to go to the emergency room or call 911.

Hives can occur due to unknown causes. We call these types of hives idiopathic urticaria. Idiopathic means “unknown cause.” Hives can also be chronic. When you have chronic hives for an unknown reason, your doctor may diagnose you with Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria, or CIU.

World Allergy Week is an annual initiative of the World Allergy Organization (WAO). The WAO is made up of 97 allergy and immunology medical groups from around the world. The WAO says up to 1.8% of the world's population suffers from CIU.

I do suffer from Hives but it is a few times a year.  Mine is due to allergies and they get the size of a dime and a quarter.  I just recently went to the dr and she prescribed a cream that is working to get the hives to go down.  It's an awful feeling and mine occur in the weirdest places.

Uniquelyme, I'm glad the meds are working. You're right, having hives IS an awful feeling. I can't explain the burning itch when I break out in hives -- it's different than almost any other kind of itch.

Touching a dog or cat--or even being near a cat outside-- causes my skin to break out in hives and worsens many asthma. There is dander in places I am unaware of, and exposed skin on my chest is typically always irritated. I wish people would stop bringing their dogs into stores, it is very stressful for me as is, but when I have to wait in line with a person with an animal I am highly allergic to... Honestly, I leave the store. And it ius not fair because I need to grocery shop, and it ius no seek ng eye dogs, it is stroller dogs... There has gotta be a way the person can not bring these types of dogs into food stores or medical buildings. I do not feel I should have to take all these medications with side effects so people can bring pets with them indoors everywhere... But I will consider tbis new medication because I do not want go be kicked out of stores by dogs taking over the world.
