Can My Son Wear a Down Coat with a Feather Allergy?
An allergy to feathers is rare. It is diagnosed by standard allergy skin testing. It is often hard to diagnose. This is because of dust mite allergens found in feathers. Studies have shown that most positive skin tests to feathers are likely because of dust mite allergens present in feathers. This is instead of the feathers themselves.
Since your son has shown a positive allergy to feathers, it would still be a good idea to avoid down coats. They are filled with feathers. This could minimize the risk of allergic symptoms.
Talk about this issue with your sonβs allergist.
