I think this is a great topic, and National Healthy School Days is a great way to educate children, parents, teachers, and the community on asthma and allergies. I think it would be worth noting the studies on second-hand dander and how it significantly affects children with asthma and allergies in schools (i.e. the study thst shows the more cat owners in classroom there are, the worse prognosis with kids with allergies and asthma). I think having individual lockers outside classrooms for...

Ironmom316, that us not cool I have seen dogs in my allergist office waitingvroom that are service dogs and I am like(to staff)--this is an allergist office waiting room and they wete like, well you can wait outside (to me). I went to a different allergist after that. If you cannot get a policy addressed correctly, switching out is always an option. I am super-allergic to dander and it developed into a serious chronic allergic disease after regularly being around dander that caused danage to...

I think that these kids who were suspended knew what they were doing better than the school officials. They were administering inhalers, not injecting epinephrine. I think a sit down conference with the students involved, their parents, the medical staff at the school and the school administration to review the situation is what should have occurred. I do not advocate sharing medications at all; I am a pharmacist and am well aware of the problems with that. However, before we knew my daughter...

To control their asthma at school they use a Symbicort inhaler before they go to school. They carry their rescue inhaler with them in case it's needed during or after gym class.

Thank you for sharing your experience. My 10 year old is going to be starting Xolair very soon, we finally got the approval from our insurance. I’m hoping this is just what she needs. She has been hospitalized so many times and is constantly absent from school because of her asthma not to mention all the steroids she’s taken. We’ve tried so many different preventative medications and it just isn’t enough. I hope all goes well and there aren’t any side effects the possibility of that is...

My child was diagnosed with Cough-Variant asthma at the age of 2. She has been on steroids since then and she is 9 and she is only at 57 lbs. Right now she takes Advair 250/50 two puffs twice a day, singular and a nasal spray. She has had an allergy test completed and everything came back negative. We have to go back to the allergist in October. With her being negative on all 22 test, how do I go about protecting her. When she has a flare-up, we do her normal meds, treatments twice a day,...

She IS a champ! What sort of accommodations does her school give her to help her manage her asthma? That would be a great new topic to start on our Asthma Support community , by the way! And if you need more help with school issues, our sister site, Kids With Food Allergies, has a school planning center that can help parents managing food allergies and/or asthma .

The school has a para assigned to her in the classroom. They follow her asthma plan to the T. Text me frequently. Check her pulse ox all the time (she has one she carries with her). Keep her out of physical activity when needed. They don't really give her any other accomodations. Not sure what they could. I agree that's a great idea. Not sure what is available. I know the school is very supportive. She doesn't have any allergies. She has had numerous allergy panels and they have checked her...

Hi Jeana, cold weather has a lot to do with Javans Asthma. Matter of fact, the change of weather period. When it rains and then gets cold, or when it’s hot and then rain, or when it gets cold alone. Javan body also heats up fast so if we cover him up in layers, we teach him to take it off in school if he gets hot and to not wait too late until he sweats because then the wind may hit him and he will get sick. Have your husband go with you to the doctor and ask the doctor questions while he’s ...

will it have a counter? there is an issue with having hundreds of students with asthma in our school system and no counter in the back of the rescue inhaler.....do we guess if there is enough medication left? the inhalers go back and forth with the students in the high school so you don't know how many times they are being used, they can be out of medication or close to running out and we won't know until there is a problem.....with the younger ones, the parent usually brings in the inhaler...
