At some point you may have had a reaction to penicillin and were told you were allergic. And there’s a good chance it has stayed in your chart throughout your childhood and into adulthood. But 9 of 10 Americans who think they have a penicillin allergy have either outgrown it or never had it in the first place. That said, it’s important to get tested by an allergist to know if you have a true penicillin allergy so you know whether to avoid the drug.

Notice any small cats and dogs riding the rails on Amtrak recently? One of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's Facebook fans did. The person told us about a recent policy change, writing: This obviously poses a huge health risk to children and adults with pet allergies, some of which may be severe or even life-threatening. Amtrak isn't even reserving a single car to be designated as pet-free, not even the quiet car. Would the AAFA be willing to send a letter to Amtrak illustrating...

If you are one of the 50 million Americans living with allergies, you’re probably familiar with the tell-tale signs of allergies, such as sneezing, itchy nose, and watery eyes. But do you know what causes these symptoms? Let’s start at the beginning. An allergy is a disease of the immune system. The body’s immune system receives input from the environment and produces a response. Its purpose is to recognize and attack foreign invaders, such as bacteria and parasites. An allergy occurs when...

By Megan Roberts, Community Engagement Program Manager at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America This post is a follow up to Breathing in the Boat: Dragon Boat World Championships With Asthma . Paddling is my passion. I’ve raced boats in half of the world’s oceans, Hungary, Italy, Hawaii, Canada, Puerto Rico and all over the United States. I have not, however, ever had the opportunity before 2017 to race in China, the birthplace of the sport of dragon boating more than 2,500 years ago.
On Oct. 14, 2017, I began my travel across the world to compete at the 13th International Dragon Boat Federation’s Nations World Championships on Dianchi Lake in Kunming, China, after a long and unlikely journey to overcome asthma symptoms that nearly prevented me from competing at all.
Before you start a home building or renovation project, consider how the products you use or install may impact the overall health of your home. During construction, a lot of dust is generated and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be released. It’s important to consider choosing materials that emit fewer gases or other asthma triggers.

Adults are more likely to develop allergies to crustacean shellfish (like crabs, lobster or shrimp), peanuts, milk, tree nuts and fin fish. 1 Adult-onset food allergies are generally life-long and are not...
Many consider personalized medicine the future of health care, and for good reason. As we learn about patients, genetics and diseases, we see that a standard approach is not the best. The purpose of personalized medicine is to provide custom treatment plans for patients. While customized care can help patients, it also adds challenges due to many factors that influence asthma.

But only 9% of the people said they had been invited to participate in one! Learn what else we found about participation in clinical trials.
My dad is one of the 24 million Americans who grew up with asthma. He is also allergic to pollen - which made working as a groundskeeper on a golf course pretty challenging. In May, he’d sometimes be unable to work for a full week at a time. My dad was able to manage his asthma and allergies (for the most part) with medication and a quick-relief asthma inhaler . He was never hospitalized due to an attack. Yet if his asthma was worse, he may have not been able to work at all. If you or a...
If you are on a treatment plan for asthma but the treatment doesn’t seem to be working, you might not have asthma. Or you may need a different type of asthma medicine. If you’ve been misdiagnosed, you might be trying to treat a condition you don’t have – and at the same time possibly ignoring a condition you really have.

Up until 2 weeks ago, I took prednisone only for a cold or flu symptoms . Also I had started on Stiolto 3 months ago, replacing Alvesco and Spiriva. My doctor recommended the change. I should have researched it. I had used Symbicort, then Advair, then Breo all with the same results: quite pronounced chest pains after a few weeks on the new med. The first time resulted in extensive testing, focusing on potential heart problems, but with numerous other tests for physical, chemical, even...
Melissa G Pickleball is a great game. Do you have issues with playing pickleball? Dr doesn’t want to give me more meds because that’s really the only issue I have. Getting a pulmonary function test Friday and dr appointment in Sept. I will push for more meds if it’s still interfering with my game.
I've been going to pulmonologists, ENTs ,Allergists , holistic options , over and over again for 3o years. Asthma just got worse. Chronic cough. Even went to Cleveland Clinic Cough Clinic. Cough would never stop. Tried all drugs prescribed. Did test for gerd twice. DiD Everything and was compliant. Been going to salt suite near me for past 3 weeks- hour and half day and I HEAR the silence of not coughing ALL the time and lungs feel not as tight. No other changes so I'm sticking to it.
I just want to thank the AAFA for their advocacy regarding the pet dander issue. I have allergic asthma and highly allergic to cat, dog, and horse dander. So much so, that my immunologist prescribed me an EpiPen after my allergy test results were revealed. Also, a few years ago, after being exposed in an airplane cabin to a dog that was shaking and being bounced around on someone's lap, I had to stop flying to the East Coast to avoid the dog dander allergen that triggers my asthma.
Interesting. I have read lots of places that essential oils can be used to reduce mold and dust mites and open airways. I use eucalyptus and tea tree aLOT... I hope I am not causing my asthma problems... I KNOW a lot of candles trigger my asthma, and cleaning chemicals like bleach and chlorine, that is why I look to alternatives with essential oils that I thought were not as harsh but could keep the air free from molds, mites, and other irritants. I do not think I have had problems with...
While I know that I am in the tiny percentage of the population who has a strong negative reaction to the Methacholine Challenge test, I want to offer one caveat. About six years ago, I had chronic cough and my doctor thought I might have asthma so he had me take the Methacholine Challenge test. Taking the test turned my, as yet unknown, asthma into moderate-to-severe persistent asthma. Hope no one else has this experience but it is something to consider.
My child was diagnosed with Cough-Variant asthma at the age of 2. She has been on steroids since then and she is 9 and she is only at 57 lbs. Right now she takes Advair 250/50 two puffs twice a day, singular and a nasal spray. She has had an allergy test completed and everything came back negative. We have to go back to the allergist in October. With her being negative on all 22 test, how do I go about protecting her. When she has a flare-up, we do her normal meds, treatments twice a day,...

I love those ideas, AAFA and Deb! There are so many cool (non-traditional) gift options out there that can be fun to celebrate and dont bother asthma/allergies: video games, board games, DVDs, or books also make great gifts.
