A concerning and dangerous trend is circulating on social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok. People are breathing in hydrogen peroxide through nebulizers to try to prevent or treat COVID-19.

DO NOT put hydrogen peroxide into your nebulizer and breathe it in. This is dangerous!

It is not a way to prevent nor treat COVID-19. Visit aafa.org/covid19 for information about asthma, allergies, and COVID-19.

Don't nebulize hydrogen peroxide to treat COVID-19

Hydrogen peroxide can be used as a cleaner and stain remover, and can cause tissue damage if you swallow it or breathe it in. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry:

"Hydrogen peroxide can be toxic if ingested, inhaled, or by contact with the skin or eyes. Inhalation of household strength hydrogen peroxide (3%) can cause respiratory irritation. Exposure to household strength hydrogen. peroxide can cause mild ocular irritation. Inhalation of vapors from concentrated (higher than 10%) solutions may result in severe pulmonary irritation."

A nebulizer is a “breathing machine” used to treat asthma. It turns liquid asthma medicine into a mist. You then breathe in the medicine through a mask or mouthpiece.

Only use asthma medicine prescribed by your doctor in your nebulizer. Other chemicals can be harmful to your lungs.

Welcome @ragweed. Hydrogen peroxide is used by some dentists as a mouthwash/gargle but it is diluted and spit out (not swallowed).

Yes, my dentist recommended this: three parts water and one part hydrogen peroxide. I declined this and went for the commercially prepared antiseptic he was offering.

A quick search found a few documented cases where harm has been established from huffing H2O2. Here's one of them;

https://www.atsjournals.org/doi/abs/10.1164/ajrccm-conference.2015.191.1_MeetingAbstracts.A1537

The naturopaths that push nebulizing H2O2 tend to recommend a diluted (.5%) solution, which seems relatively safe. But the potential for misuse exists. The toxicity of H2O2 at higher concentrations has been established;

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15298493/

I also have not seen any sustaniated evidence that nebulizing H2O2 does anything to stop/slow covid infection. Why huff diluted poison when a free vaccine with real, proven effectiveness exists ... to show that you know more than all the medical professionals in the world?
"If a person chooses to inhale hydrogen peroxide, they are making a personal decision for themselves only and are accepting all personal risk." But if they are doing so in lieu of getting vaccinated against covid, they are putting those around them at risk. Please, get the jab - help put covid behind us.

Hi @Blard,

Hydrogen peroxide is considered toxic by the Agency For Toxic Substances And Disease Registry: learn more here.

It is a known irritant to the eyes, nose, respiratory airways, and skin. It can be toxic if ingested, inhaled, or by contact with the skin or eyes. Here is a journal article on hydrogen peroxide poisoning.

Hope this helps!

Being forced to inhale dog dander in public businesses and stores is dangerous, too, but we are still waiting for a disclaimer like this. If a person chooses to inhale hydrogen peroxide, they are making a personal decision for themselves only and are accepting all personal risks. However, asthmatics and people with allergies are being forced against our wills to inhale dog dander, and while we understand the life-threatening risks, we don't have a choice. Please create a graphic for that, as well.

Thank you but very little information (none) is given here to substantiate the level of harmfulness, along with other articles that I have read that are about a sentence long claiming this “unstable” molecule can damage cells and dna. Except, hydrogen peroxide is used for injuries (in lacerations in which it can enter the bloodstream) and for gargling where it enters the mouth and sometimes the stomach. If causes such damage to the dna, it should probably not be used for gargling either. So only lung cells it harms and the evidence of this?? I am reading studies where a small portion of subjects are given inhalation treatment and nowhere did it mention harm.

When the covid first hit last year, an old friend told me she nebulizes H2O2 whenever she's exposed to crowds. She is anti-mask & anti-vax. I researched it a bit and found Dr Mercola (a popular internet alt-med "doctor" who markets all kinds of alt-med products and disperses covid disinformation) was advocating this. He's probably selling nebulizers / "food grade" H2O2. An immediate RED flag. I will say my dentist has me gargle with diluted H2O2 before checking my teeth and gums, so it must have some antiviral properties, but I surely won't be inhaling H2O2 mist.
