Asthma can affect anyone, but it doesn’t affect everyone equally. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) launched the Health Equity Advancement and Leadership (HEAL) program in May 2022 to reinforce our commitment to creating health equity among people with asthma.

What Is Health Equity?

Health equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to reach their highest level of health.

As part of the HEAL program, AAFA funds four local interventions, or programs, through our HEAL Innovation awards. These awards provide funding and resources to local programs tailored to at-risk populations most impacted by asthma. In the first year, AAFA has funded programs in Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, and St. Louis.

The overall goal of HEAL Innovation is to reduce asthma deaths and illness among high-risk populations. To support that goal, three companies are generously donating CERTIFIED asthma & allergy friendly® products to the program sites. The sites are giving these products to people with asthma to help them make their homes healthier:

Pegasus Home Fashions logoPegasus Home Fashions is donating Beautyrest® pillows to help reduce exposure to allergens and provide a healthier sleeping environment.

Rabbit Air logoRabbit Air is donating air cleaners and replacement filters to help improve indoor air quality and remove asthma and allergy triggers from the air.

Renegade detergent logoRenegade Brands is donating Sweat-X Free and Clear laundry detergent to help reduce allergens in fabrics washed with their detergent.

AAFA thanks Pegasus, Rabbit Air, and Renegade for their generous donations in support of our mission to improve health equity for people affected by asthma.

Many products promise to help control allergens. The asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program was created to help you find and choose products that reduce indoor asthma and allergy triggers and contribute to healthier indoor environments. We test products to make sure they meet strict scientific standards. Only products that meet these standards earn the right to carry the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Mark.

When you are shopping for products for your home, look for the CERTIFIED mark. It indicates the product has passed our strict scientific testing standards. Visit aafa.org/certified to search for CERTIFIED products and learn more about the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program.
