Can Toilet Paper Cause Skin Irritation?
The most likely causes for your skin irritation and itching after using a new brand of toilet paper are:
- Allergic contact dermatitis: This is due to preservatives, fragrances, or other allergens in the toilet paper.
- Irritant contact dermatitis: This is due to physical properties (such as roughness or recycled products) or irritant chemicals in the toilet paper.
Stop using the toilet paper. This typically helps improve the symptoms. Continue using brands that you have been OK with in the past.
If your symptoms continue, meet with an allergist or dermatologist. Theyβll do a workup and create an allergy management plan. They may also recommend other products.
