Question
Is it possible to get contact allergies from another person who uses a product you are allergic to? My partner uses a vape. I have been dealing with a rash, similar to rosacea, but around my mouth.
Answer

Yes, this can happen. It would be very helpful to know the actual ingredients in the vaping product that your partner is using.

Contact allergic reactions can happen with topical exposure to the allergen or irritant on the skin around the mouth by contact. This can cause a transfer of an allergen or irritant to the skin. This results in a contact allergic reaction.

It would also be helpful for you to see an allergist or dermatologist. They’ll assess your skin rash and determine if it is allergic contact dermatitis. A clinical history and if needed, allergy patch skin testing can be done to help make a diagnosis.

Recommendations on what to avoid and how to treat these skin rashes could be made by the specialist.

Studies have shown that secondhand e-cigarette aerosol can worsen existing asthma and cause asthma flare-ups, especially in young people. Exposure to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol can cause the following respiratory symptoms:
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough increased or thickened mucus

Secondhand vape is e-cigarette aerosol inhaled by someone who doesn't vape.

Hey there @Ahhchoo. Ugh, sorry you are dealing with this! I have a hard time with smoke too, including from vapes.

Do you rent or own your space? If you rent, you may be able to speak to the landlord or leasing office about this. You could also try putting up some "no smoking" signs near the furnace intake. Not sure the neighbor will listen, but worth a try.

If you don't already have a HEPA filter for your HVAC system, that may help too.

I'd recommend posting this as a separate thread on the community to see if others have suggestions for you. I'd be curious to hear what advice others may have. I hope you find some relief soon!

Moe M.

Hello!

Occasionally, I sense someone vaping around my furnace intake. My neighbors and I only share a fence between our patios.    This toxic plume of fume quickly disperses throughout my home.  It burns my pharynx and all the way to my cardiac sphincter. OUCH!  No appetite for this allergy stricken and celiac disease person.     It leaves me sick for hours.  I have four air purifiers going thereafter. I work from home 3 days a week already. (Away from coworkers vaping habits).  Why am I so isolated?  Should I wear my respirator from home improvement projects?

Is there a way to prevent this vape contaminated air from entering a home at the furnace intake?  Has anyone invented an outdoor filter or barrier to protect the fumes from entering my allergen-safe home at the furnace intake?  Google has nothing.

When air circulation stopped leaving through home chimneys, who would have thought vaping would have started at the intake?

I can change my furnace filter, HEPAs and more.  I am thinking more of a type of barrier whether made of 8' artificial greenery in u shape or weather resistant plastic u shaped barrier to only allow higher air plumes to enter at the furnace intake area.  Perhaps I should look into having my furnace pathway changed back to leaving through the roof.  If that is allowable these days?

It is sad vaping folks do this to others. Such careless behaviors. Folks that actually do care wonder why I am so isolated.  They don't feel my pain from the vape. I understand.  The rash thereafter feels like a chemical burn.  OUCH! Do these folks realize they are inflicting pain on others?

What may I do about this?  I found a welcome mat that has two words, 'please leave'.  I should add, 'unless you too have allergies'.

Thank you much,

ACHoo
