Is it Common to Have so Many Flare-Ups with Eosinophilic Asthma?

Title Image
Question
I have been diagnosed with severe eosinophilic asthma. I’m waiting for my biologic treatment. But while I wait for the biologics, I have had several asthma flare-ups despite taking medicines and trying to avoid triggers. Is it normal to have so many flare-ups with eosinophilic asthma?
Answer

Yes, it is. Frequent flare-ups of asthma symptoms are common in people with severe eosinophilic asthma. This is especially true if the person is not on a recommended biologic treatment. Eosinophilic asthma is a type of asthma caused by high levels of white blood cells in the airways of the lungs. The white blood cells are called eosinophils.

While you wait to start a biologic, you can have on-going eosinophilic inflammation in the lungs. You may also have frequent asthma flare-ups. This can even happen while you are using regular treatments.

While you wait for the biologic treatment, continue to follow up with your doctor. They’ll make sure your Asthma Action Plan is up to date and effective.
