Should I See A Dermatologist or Allergist For Eczema?
Both allergists and dermatologists can evaluate and treat eczema. There are some things to think about when deciding which specialist to see.
Allergists can help identify triggers for eczema (e.g., food and environmental allergens). This can be done with a clinical history and allergy testing. They can recommend avoidance measures and environmental controls. In some cases, immunotherapy (allergy shots) can be used. This decreases the bodyβs immune response to allergens.
A dermatologist can offer a skin biopsy. This is if the eczema is unusual or is not responding to common treatments.
Both specialists may recommend skin patch testing. This can rule out allergic contact dermatitis. They can also recommend treatments. To manage difficult cases of eczema, itβs useful to see both specialists.
