Question
What are the risks of uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy?
Answer

If asthma isn’t controlled during pregnancy, there are known medical risks and complications. They may include:

  • Preterm (early) labor and delivery. This can result in a premature birth.
  • Babies with a low birth weight.
  • High blood pressure and a related medical condition known as preeclampsia.

Follow up with your primary healthcare provider, obstetrician, and asthma specialist. This is very important. They’ll make sure that the asthma is well controlled during pregnancy. They’ll also help prevent complications.

This care is vital for the health of the person who is pregnant and the baby.

@Lisa breathe I hear you!

Recently, some major asthma inhaler manufacturers have announced a $35 a month caps on out-of-pocket costs. The price cap applies to people with commercial/private insurance or no insurance. This blog as more info - AAFA Leads the Way to Lower Costs of Asthma Inhalers

While the price cap is great news for many who are uninsured or have commercial insurance, government insurance hasn't seen those benefits yet. AAFA is still advocating for people with government insurance so they can have access to affordable medications. The work is certainly not done and medication access is one of our key policy issues. Drug pricing is a complex process and lawmakers are beginning to unravel the complicated system, but it takes time. For context, this blog helps explain the drug pricing system - The Complexity of Drug Pricing in the U.S. Continues to Impact People with Asthma
