We updated this blog post on Aug. 6, 2020, to include studies on how masks may prevent the spread of the new coronavirus and lessen severity of symptoms.
my sister bought a mask with fans in it and it allowed her to commute without heat building up or getting sweaty. Although its a bit big on her face she can breathe comfortably now. the blue masks were driving her nuts.
We updated this blog post on Aug. 13, 2020, to include information on types of face masks or coverings that aren't effective at preventing the spread of the new coronavirus.
I had to wear a mask for hours on Wednesday. Now it is Friday. My ribcage still hurts. But I am afraid to be without a mask. I am afraid of fines and assault. People have threatened me. People say, (Real Loud) "People without masks should be drug out and shot." I have begged our politicians to say something. I have tripled my asthma meds. I get my groceries delivered. This year needs to end.
I am so sorry that happened @Jennsita . The AAFA community will know what you're talking about and will support you as best we can in this 2020 challenge. Would you be willing to share your thoughts in Having breathing issues while wearing a face mask where we can have a longer conversation. Hang in there and hugs from us all.
I am currently battling my employer over my asthma. I am dealing with constant issues of my mask not being worn well enough. It came to a head when I had to remove it to use my inhaler and wasn't wearing it in the office. I was still maintaining social distancing in a office with less than 10 people and keeping more than 8 feet apart, but it wasn't good enough. I think I'm going to have to quit because the pressure is giving me anxiety attacks on top of my asthma.
Welcome, DeannaBu.That's a most frustrating situation to find yourself in. I hope some AAFA community members can support you as you figure things out. There's a conversation at Having breathing issues while wearing a face mask where people are talking about work pressures. Would you share your thoughts there?
@DeannaBu I’m sorry that you have to go through this . As someone with primary Ciliary Dyskinesia and also allergic asthma, migraines, I understand completely. But also as an supervisor for a government agency part of my requirements are to make sure compliance of PPE, masks . It certainly is an interesting time that we are right now but it takes all stakeholders to come to a solution. At my job we require mask use pretty much at all times . We also social distance. Even with social...
I have asthma, severe asthma, all my life. Recently, I was diagnosed with allergies; environmental and food allergies. Both are no fun to have because one might not be triggered but the other does and vise versa. I've read comments on here about wearing a mask and I've also read on this website about wearing a mask isn't bad for asthmatic people. Let me tell you, I don't need Science to tell me, I don't need the CDC, Dr. Fauci and the WHO to tell me that mask works because...IT DOES NOT...
Wearing a face covering remains an important tool for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Face coverings protect not only ourselves but others who can't wear a mask, such as kids under 2 who can't wear a mask and kids under 12 who are not eligible for the vaccine. Unfortunately, face coverings can feel restrictive which can be stressful. Finding a mask that fits comfortably and wearing it for short periods can help to see what works for an individual. Keeping nasal allergies and asthma under...
Hello @Jeb6708 and welcome! Good question and answered in part at September Asthma Epidemic . Please join in the discussions the Asthma Support forum. Depending on where you live, the topic Wildfire Season 2021 Has Started - Check In! is a place to start. Again, it's good to have you in the community.
That's a great question - why do asthma flares peak in September? It's the height of ragweed season in many areas, mold counts are rise as leaves start to fall, flu season starts, and kids head back to school and pass around respiratory viruses like colds. Also school buildings that have been closed all summer may have a build up of other allergens and irritants. All of these can be asthma triggers. COVID precautions in schools (masks, distancing, increased airflow) may help reduce some of...
We're glad you're here @Lizz . Welcome! Can you feel the approaching high season through pollens, mold, or things like return to school? I hope you'll share those ideas and how you deal with them in the Asthma Support forum too.
I'm have asthma like a lot of people do, but I don't like wearing any mask, they all feel suffocating and like I can't breathe at all because of the mask, it's in the way of how we live, I can't even run with having the mask on.
Yes, my dentist recommended this: three parts water and one part hydrogen peroxide. I declined this and went for the commercially prepared antiseptic he was offering. Iris
Thank you but very little information (none) is given here to substantiate the level of harmfulness, along with other articles that I have read that are about a sentence long claiming this “unstable” molecule can damage cells and dna. Except, hydrogen peroxide is used for injuries (in lacerations in which it can enter the bloodstream) and for gargling where it enters the mouth and sometimes the stomach. If causes such damage to the dna, it should probably not be used for gargling either. So...
When the covid first hit last year, an old friend told me she nebulizes H2O2 whenever she's exposed to crowds. She is anti-mask & anti-vax. I researched it a bit and found Dr Mercola (a popular internet alt-med "doctor" who markets all kinds of alt-med products and disperses covid disinformation) was advocating this. He's probably selling nebulizers / "food grade" H2O2. An immediate RED flag. I will say my dentist has me gargle with diluted H2O2 before checking my teeth and gums, so it...
Being forced to inhale dog dander in public businesses and stores is dangerous, too, but we are still waiting for a disclaimer like this. If a person chooses to inhale hydrogen peroxide, they are making a personal decision for themselves only and are accepting all personal risks. However, asthmatics and people with allergies are being forced against our wills to inhale dog dander, and while we understand the life-threatening risks, we don't have a choice . Please create a graphic for that,...
Hi @Blard , Hydrogen peroxide is considered toxic by the Agency For Toxic Substances And Disease Registry: learn more here . It is a known irritant to the eyes, nose, respiratory airways, and skin. It can be toxic if ingested, inhaled, or by contact with the skin or eyes. Here is a journal article on hydrogen peroxide poisoning. Hope this helps! Lorene
Hi Ragweed - thank you for pulling up those articles. The potential for harm is high and there is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that it is effective.
A quick search found a few documented cases where harm has been established from huffing H2O2. Here's one of them; https://www.atsjournals.org/ doi/abs/10.1164/ajrccm- conference.2015.191.1_ MeetingAbstracts.A1537 The naturopaths that push nebulizing H2O2 tend to recommend a diluted (.5%) solution, which seems relatively safe. But the potential for misuse exists. The toxicity of H2O2 at higher concentrations has been established; https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih. gov/15298493/ I also have not...
@Tia74 and @AllergyKid2006 - it looks like these types of devices are not currently covered by insurance. At least one existing device has a program to provide them free for patients who qualify. So, I think it will be a wait and see to know how this one will be priced or if there will be a patient assistance program.
We updated this blog post on Oct. 26, 2021, to include a video on air cleaners, information on COVID-19 and proper air ventilation, and the impact of air pollution on COVID-19 rates.
I wish more people would be mindful of the impact that having animals present for trick or treat has on people who have to avoid the animals. Too many people bring their dogs, in particular, to trick or treat. Animals should not be present, including coming to the door of a house that participates in the event. It is an event for kids and their parents to enjoy and celebrate, and they should not be worried that an animal will cause an allergic reaction. This has gotten much worse over the...
