Thank you so much from all of us who suffer and for this update ! I too have to worry about traveling with animals, where I can stay, hotel, rental home that a cat /dog has not stayed in. I get extremely sick for a long period of time. Definitely ruins a vacation or going to see my kids in other States. Michelle Keen
KMC, My CSS was diagnosed after a medical crisis-- It was evening and I was struggling to breathe (not long after my ex dropped a bunch of my stuff that was covered in cat and dog dander off to the room I was staying in at my parents house) and I had moved out of his house because of my severe allergies (which seemed controlled with Singualair at first that is why I moved in there but after a year I had asthma symptoms and phlegm and kept needing to go to the ER for breathing treatments and...
@Ironmom316 You're right that this issue (bringing non-service animals into public places) needs practical solutions. This specific program mentioned above is meant to address allergens in the home. While, not having a dog in your house will certainly result in fewer allergens in the house, there's nothing that can be done prevent private citizens from keeping pets their homes. That said, we (AAFA) will continue to find ways to help address what we can.
Being forced to inhale dog dander in public businesses and stores is dangerous, too, but we are still waiting for a disclaimer like this. If a person chooses to inhale hydrogen peroxide, they are making a personal decision for themselves only and are accepting all personal risks. However, asthmatics and people with allergies are being forced against our wills to inhale dog dander, and while we understand the life-threatening risks, we don't have a choice . Please create a graphic for that,...
When I developed allergies from my dog, I went for a hunt to find ways to eliminate the dander. I invested in a purifier that is active not passive that eliminated the triggers from the air and and a water purifier that splits water alkaline/acidic. I use acidic water to bathe my dog. He will not drink any other kind of water other than alkaline water. He's the healthiest he has ever been, no doggy odor, he doesn't snore any more, we're both happy campers.
Kenneth, It is not sufficient nor helpful for a person with life-threatening and severe dander-sensitive asthma and allergies to merely be moved to a different part of the plane from a dog or other animal. This is no more effective or helpful than moving to another part of a plane away from a person smoking a cigarette. Dander permeates the air and is deadly from any distance. AAFA needs to be advocating aggressively and vehement for our ADA-protected rights. We need access to dander-free...
My heart also goes out to all the people who can't fly and go into public buildings; the child forced to deplane while adults cheered and jeered at him; the people dragged off planes or forced off planes because dogs are being put before people with asthma, allergies, autism, dog phobias and OCD. We need the federal service dog law to be tighter, with state registries, to not only protect people with legitimate service dogs, such as blind people, but to end this trend of everyone thinking...
Thank you for this summary. Such important initiatives to Champion! Pets/ESA/manipulative use of animal in public use business spaces by the public and animal owners in AIRLINERS (especially closed spaces) and event store/shop/retail/restaurant space businesses. Has been long, long, overdue. This has been extremely harmful for the disability population as we have seen. An application of service animal needed to be made OR ENFORCED. By large business associations and large companies, only way...
We agree with you, lori 1022. The problem spans all aspects of life: education, housing, work, transportation, medical care, recreation and basic activities of daily living. We need laws to protect people who are allergic and/or anxious, as there is direct discrimination even in the laws that are written. People are taking their dogs everywhere, because first the legal system allowed them to, and then it became socially acceptable. The media has become an enormous partner in the problem,...
We so need healthier schools. It has become trendy to bring dogs everywhere, including schools. The principal of Westbrook Middle School is bringing her dog to school. We complained that she was showing her bias and being selfish, and that she was discriminating against all the people in the school with allergies and asthma. She was featured on the news with her dog, saying that it roamed the halls. We are appalled, and we need laws to protect us from this kind of rampant discrimination...
