Generic Montelukast and Singulair Will Now Carry Stronger Warning Label About Possible Side Effects

AAFA Community Services ·
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that it is requiring a boxed warning – the agency’s most prominent warning – for montelukast (sold under the brand name Singulair and in generic form) to strengthen an existing warning about the risk of neuropsychiatric events associated with the drug, which is used to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis (hay fever).

Thank you, I took Singulair for over a year in which it seemed to work great for allergies and then started having a worsening if symptoms, and developed churg-strauss syndrome. I always warn people about that med-disease connection as it is being correlated although causation has not bern proven. I have heard from others about these neuropsychiatric events. I wouldnt let my child take this med or recommend it to anyone I know due to my personal history and from these new warnings.

Hi Shea, how did you go about getting CSS diagnosis? I'm wondering if that is now my problem. I have all of the possible symptoms and have taken Montelukast on and off for 7 years. Thank you

KMC, My CSS was diagnosed after a medical crisis-- It was evening and I was struggling to breathe (not long after my ex dropped a bunch of my stuff that was covered in cat and dog dander off to the room I was staying in at my parents house) and I had moved out of his house because of my severe allergies (which seemed controlled with Singualair at first that is why I moved in there but after a year I had asthma symptoms and phlegm and kept needing to go to the ER for breathing treatments and...

Been taking it since the early 2000s around when it first became available. Stopped for a few years between 2012 and 2014 and started taking it again in 2015. I've experienced every single side effect. With the amount of things I've gone through that im not willing to type, I'm glad I'm still alive. Though I cannot reasonably say it is solely due to this drug.

I've been on Singulair/Montelukast since its creation in 1998. I've experienced all these horrible symptoms and its egregious that patients were allowed to suffer for decades. I just recently asked my doctor if I could remove myself from this medication due to the black box warning. It's a shame no one else noticed the parallel symptoms of major depression and asthma.

Side effects of any Rx - medication is concerning to me as I have documented drugs that I have worse side effects to. Montelukast Rx I've been taking for about 2 yrs for allergic asthma, also, inhaler, nebulizer treatments, for when my allergic asthma is at worse of pollen season. I also use hepa air filters, change filter on my A/C, protective covers on my pillows, mattresses. To date, I've not had bad side effects to Montelukast. However, back in 1988, my allergic asthma was really bad,...

@Mrcurlydad and @katalinfrog - sorry to hear you experienced so many side effects. @Whippetartist - thanks for share your story as well. And, yes, it's important to talk with your doctor if you are experiencing side effects to any medicine.
