Update – July 20, 2020
We have updated this blog post to reflect which states have ended or extended their open enrollment periods.
With the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), many uninsured people are concerned about medical costs if they get sick. Several states have opened up their health care exchanges for a special open enrollment period. Some states are also giving people who’ve lost their jobs the chance to enroll.
If you need insurance, you can enroll in the following states:
- California – deadline July 31 (extended)
- District of Columbia – open indefinitely
- Massachusetts – deadline July 23 (extended)
- New York – deadline Aug. 15 (extended)
- Vermont – deadline Aug. 14 (extended)
Open enrollment has ended in these states, unless you qualify for a special enrollment period (for example: loss of job, decrease of income or other qualifying life event):
- Colorado – deadline April 30
- Connecticut – deadline April 17
- Maryland – deadline June 15
- Minnesota – deadline May 25
- Nevada – deadline April 15
- Rhode Island – deadline April 15
- Washington – deadline April 8
If you lost health care coverage because you recently lost your job, you may also qualify to get health insurance from the federal health insurance marketplace at Healthcare.gov.
