How Can I Eliminate My Eye Allergy Symptoms?
Nasal congestion or a stuffy nose causes allergic shiners. Nasal congestion happens when the tissue and blood vessels in the nose become swollen with excess fluid. This excess fluid, which is commonly caused by allergies, collects in the small veins under the eyes. The blood pools under the eyes and these swollen veins dilate and darken, creating dark circles and puffiness. This creates blue-gray or purple circles under the eyelids. This is called “Allergic Shiners”.
The most effective way to deal with allergic shiners is to treat the underlying cause such as:
- Allergies such as pet dander, dust mites, and pollen
- Irritants such as cigarette smoke, pollution, perfumes
- Lack of sleep
- Eczema
- Dehydration
Common treatments include nasal saline washes, antihistamines (oral or nasal sprays), decongestants, topical nasal steroid sprays, and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Another anti-inflammatory is Singulair.
Since you have tried many of these eye allergy treatments, allergy shots may be a good option for you. They can be very effective for patients with more severe allergies. Speak with your doctor or allergist about other allergy treatment options.
