Question
What are some things I can do to improve my health and asthma? I'd like to eventually take up running, but it has been very difficult.
Answer

This is a really great question! There are many things you can do to strengthen your lungs, improve lung health and optimize asthma control.

  1. It is very important to get good sleep, rest, and relaxation.
  2. Keep your weight in a healthy range. This can benefit asthma control. Obesity can have a negative impact on asthma.
  3. Focus on a well-balanced, healthy diet. It should contain fresh fruits, vegetables, fiber-rich foods, healthy fats, and lean meats.
  4. Establish a goal of regular exercise, daily. Ideally, this is 30 minutes a day. Walking can be a great place to start. If your asthma is controlled, you will be able to participate in aerobic activities. This can include running. Staying active makes your lungs stronger.
  5. Have regular appointments with your healthcare provider to monitor asthma control.
  6. Use your asthma medications as prescribed.
  7. Stay current with your vaccinations, especially annual influenza vaccines.
  8. If you have allergies, follow measures to avoid relevant allergen exposure. Take your allergy medications appropriately.
  9. Avoid air pollution and environmental irritants.
  10. Stop smoking cigarettes if you are a smoker. Avoid secondhand smoke.
  11. Practice deep breathing exercises. These can help with relaxation and benefit the muscles that help with breathing.
