Thanks, Shea! I'm so glad you shared your comments with the EPA! I hope other people will make their opinions known as well. Folks here can also sign up to be an AAFA Advocate by joining AAFA's Action Network if they haven't already.
@Maku @Marcia Z Ball When I tell you what helped me so much you’re gonna kick yourself. So last week I noticed I had the skin peeling in between my fingers, on top of my hands, on the underside of my hand (my open palm) on the tips of my fingers ... just everywhere! I will attach a pic. It doesn’t look terrible bc I caught it at the beginning bc I can’t take it. I noticed tht when I wash my hands or used hand sanitizer they would burn from the small cuts. I went out and bought Lubriderm. $5...
Welcome Zara - sorry your eczema has been so bad from using hand sanitizers. Is it better if you can wash your hands instead? Or is the extra handwashing irritating as well? I hope the moisturizing tips help!
The main source to avoid the transmission of the coronavirus is to wash hands with sanitizers or soaps. But what if people with skin disease do? Good to know that the blog helps people with eczema, a skin disease where patches of skin becomes inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough. This blog helped me to know about how people with this type of skin disease might find it difficult to use sanitizers or soaps for washing hands. Thank you for sharing such an informative blog. I would like to know...
Hi Mastaneh and welcome. Soap helps break down the sticky bond between the virus and your hand. That's one reason you need to wash for 20 seconds - to give the soap time to work to break those bonds so the virus can be rinsed away with the soap. Can you use a plain but mild soap then apply moisturizer after patting your hands dry?
This is a great blog post! Be sure to keep hydrated, especially with the heat running more during cold days and nights! Keep your head propped up during the night, to help keep your airway open. Be sure to contact your doctor right away if things just don't seem right. Cover your face with a scarf if going out into the cold. Yes, this means over your mask. Be sure to wash your hands properly when necessary. Follow your medication schedule as directed by your doctor! Also, don't forget to...
I can't find any information anywhere about patients with asthma (specifically) and COVID-19 mortality rates. I am a relatively healthy individual with mild but persistent allergy triggered asthma. My singulair seems to keep it under control. I've had the flu twice this season (different strains) with no complications. But, I am curious, so these are my questions: I've heard that the jury is still out on what exactly causes respiratory complications from viruses in people with asthma. Some...
Hello @I Am Curious , I am happy to hear you weathered two different flu virus strains this year without complications! Most healthy people recover from flu without complications (and is what is being seen in coronavirus COVID-19 as well). But when you have asthma, it can put you at higher risk because asthmatic lungs already have swelling. When you have a respiratory infection, your immune system responds by creating more mucus and releasing substances from your cells to fight the virus or...
Thank you for the updates! Super helpful! I just wanted to point out that the one study that found no to link to increased risk of complications in persons with asthma also didn't study anyone with asthma. Ie none of the 140 had (or knew they had) asthma. I think that's an important detail. The wording of the study itself, concerning asthma and allergic diseases, is misleading until you read the whole thing. Two patients had COPD and they both had grim outcomes. Take what you want from that,...
Absolutely agree with you on this. That study is not particularly helpful and I’m unclear ho they came to the conclusion they did without the direct study of asthmatics. It’s hard not to panic.
I am struck by how “experts” keep reassuring the general public that there is no alarm if you’re healthy and then in passing mention the elderly and those with underlying issues are at higher risk - like we don’t need reassurance. Very little time is spent on these groups when talking about Coronavirus. There are countless people that fall into these categories - lung disease, heart disease, cancers, etc. It is hard not to panic or have anxiety with the 24/7 coverage. So i wash my hands...
Yes they have said these people are at greater risk of complications. That really is just a foregone conclusion. What they are all, including all the coverage you see on tv is transmission. Just because you are of compromised health does not mean you are at greater risk of contracting the illness. The current focus is on preventing the spread of the virus. It’s important to weigh what you see in the coverage, very little study has been done on the severity due to the rapid spreading. The...
Hi @Karleeta we completely understand your concern and fear. Fever and a dry cough are symptoms of a virus. If your son is not running a fever it very well could just be an asthma flare. I hope he is feeling better? The best thing you can do is to make sure both your children take their asthma medications as directed. Do they have asthma action plans? Keep them at home as much as possible, wipe down surfaces with disinfectant wipes, wash hands often and keep them from touching their faces.
Lorene, Thank you for responding back to me. He is feeling a little better. Thank you for asking. They do have Asthma Action Plans. They are with grandparents for a couple days while we make sure our home is disinfectant really good. They are already on top with the washing of the hands and using hand sanitizer. We have been stressing that with them. I know their school just postponed it for another week. I know they will be staying home and not go no where. That is another reason why they...
Hi there! I am so glad he is feeling a little better. It can take such a long time to recover from an asthma flare. Sending healing mojo your way! I have been carrying disinfectant wipes with me and literally have one in my hand all the time to open doors and hit elevator buttons. I'm also using my elbows and hips instead of my hands as much as possible. The virus can live on some surfaces for up to 3 days, so a good cleaning sounds like a good plan, and will probably give you some peace of...
@Tia74 , I have some general recommendations (below) for you based on what you've shared so far, but I believe I would be able to give you better advice based on your specific situation if I had a few more details. If that's of interest to you, please contact me at the AAFA Support Center via phone (800-727-8462) or email ( info@aafa.org ). Recommendations: If you live in a home where you have access to the HVAC filters, you should make sure they are being replaced when they're dirty If you...
*I am not a doctor,* I suffer from cat allergies also. Gently wash your eyes, face with clean water & ivory soap, or gently use a baby wipe cloth. Use Refresh eyedrops. If you lay down in your bed after touching, being with the cat, you will have to wash, clean your bedding before you go to sleep again. Its not being "rude," if you want to be near cats, to wear a mask, gloves, eye covering/protective goggles. Cat dander gives me asthma, along with other allergic reactions. I can't be...
