I am 9 months out from my final BT! I have been OFF the prednisone since May 3rd and NO asthma spells. I have had several colds and upper respiratory infections and normally I would’ve been hospitalized due to flare ups but none! I just ran my first 5k this past weekend!! I have never been healthy enough to do so in my 24yr of life & it was the coolest and best feeling in the world! I’m also down 30lb from no steroids!
Hey there! Firstly, I have to mention that your article has been very insightful and helped me discover everything about pollution allergy . It has been rampant especially in our locality as a couple of new factories have come up recently. Lately, my husband has been showing symptoms caused due to air pollution. His continuous sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy and red eyes have been my concern for pretty long. As you mentioned, I guess we will have to see an allergist at the earliest so...
Interesting. I have read lots of places that essential oils can be used to reduce mold and dust mites and open airways. I use eucalyptus and tea tree aLOT... I hope I am not causing my asthma problems... I KNOW a lot of candles trigger my asthma, and cleaning chemicals like bleach and chlorine, that is why I look to alternatives with essential oils that I thought were not as harsh but could keep the air free from molds, mites, and other irritants. I do not think I have had problems with...
Shea, I think this would be a great discussion to have with your doctor. It's tricky sometimes figuring out exactly what is triggering our asthma, but by keeping a detailed journal, we can uncover patterns of what makes our asthma worse and what makes it better.
Patients were heard! The Graham-Cassidy bill is defeated. Pre-existing conditions, lifetime caps and other protections for patients are protected. Thank you to all of our advocates for sharing your stories and taking action. We hope the next step to improving our health care system puts patients’ needs front and center and that our leadership listens and fixes the items that are still barriers to care.
this has not proven to be true in our home. We had a dog since before my daughter (asthmatic) was born, and when she was tested for many types of airborne allergies, dogs were the ONLY thing that came back red flagged! Shows the research changes all the time in what they tell you. Be careful telling people this info! Could do more harm than good!
I totally understand your thoughts ... we've lived with pets since before DD came home, and she has allergies and eczema and asthma. I think it's important for parents to talk to their allergists and get the recommendations for their individual situation. Research, however, can show us the big picture and possibly lead to more understanding.
Thank you for sharing a window into your world, Deb! You are an absolutely amazing member of our Asthma and Allergic Disease Support Online Community !
Thank you for sharing Debbie and thank you aafa for highlighting this importabt topic. I was just reading about a study done by USC in which the air pollution declined 20 percent over a 20 year period and it corresponded with a 20 percent decline in new cases of children's asthma-- which provides strong circumstantial evidence that reducing air pollution reduces illness. We are all sharing the air. I try very hard to limit travel to necessity only, drive a car with good gas mileage, and buy...
While I know that I am in the tiny percentage of the population who has a strong negative reaction to the Methacholine Challenge test, I want to offer one caveat. About six years ago, I had chronic cough and my doctor thought I might have asthma so he had me take the Methacholine Challenge test. Taking the test turned my, as yet unknown, asthma into moderate-to-severe persistent asthma. Hope no one else has this experience but it is something to consider.
I contacted my insurance company, Tufts, very happy that finally there is a generic Advair cost includes a $400 deductible per year then each discus is about $150. Not surprisingly, they told me that the generic isn't available on my plan. Ya. And if I wanted to, I could ask for an exception so that it's avaiable on my plan. Then, if it's approved it's TIER FIVE. The brand name Advair is tier four. So Tufts would charge me even more for the generic, IF they approved it for my plan. I've...
Sadaya, thanks for letting us know this information. You were smart to check with your insurance company and see if and how they would cover the generic version. Are you eligible for any of the programs on AAFA's patient assistance page ?
Also, could you check with your doctor and let your doctor know that, due to cost, you are not able to take your medications as directed? Your doctor may be able to help you figure out alternative medications. AAFA has a great blog post series on complementary medicine. The first blog post in the series is called: AAFA Explains: What Is the Difference Between Alternative and Complementary Medicine?
Wonderful surprise, scientist finally created a cost efficient. Generic version of my, medicine. Since Advair arrived on the, shelves my doctor has prescribed it. Since girlhood, I had to take several inhalers, pulmonary machine plus allergy medicines. So grateful about this update!
Mylan has released more information on their new FDA-approved generic version of ADVAIR DISKUS®, the Wixela™ Inhub™. Read the press release for more details.
Thanks for being willing to share -- this is a great way to put a "face" to asthma and to show that you can still be active with asthma! Also, great tip about ALWAYS having inhalers handy!
Thanks for sharing, it's so stressful to watch your child go through this and all so familiar as to how it was for me when young. I'd be fine but never realized how fast an attack could come on. My mom would listen to my breathing and count how many breaths or how fast my chest was going up and down. I was taken off of dairy and wheat, it did make a difference for me to do that. One thing that helps me now is to have a portable nebulizer that can plug into the wall or in the car, so I...

I underwent my second Bronchial Thermoplasty on October 4th, 2018. My recovery from BT 2 was a bit longer than the first procedure because my left side is weaker than my right. I was back to work though after 5 days off and back to my everyday life. I just had my third and final procedure done and being day 1 it has been ROUGH. my ribs feel like they're all cracked, I get winded just sitting up in bed but this is all expected and normal. I just keep telling myself it will all pay off in the...
There are other hard surface alternatives, from linoleum (perhaps the ultimate “green” flooring) to tile to vinyl. It’s even possible to get hard-wearing and attractive flooring made from recycled tires. I’d like to see a true comparison between all the options, pros and cons, and include such possible irritant/triggers as off-gasing from padding and carpet materials.
Hi Debbie, The only personal concern (since I have a latex allergy) I have with a recycled tire floor is that its made of latex. It's really amazing how many products are made of latex--even some furniture!! Brenda
Yeah I tried some Himalayan pink salt from the indian grocery store and it seems to be having a really good effect on me because I get a good feeling and feel very rejuvenated..........I guess it helps clear the dust out of my system and breathing better.
It definitely helps for me and maybe more people who Asthma should be required to live by the ocean. I mean maybe this is something that should really be considered by lawmakers because it is all so hurtful for me dealing with my condition.
Love to hear how this Mom is using the alerts to help her better manage both her and her sons asthma. The Air Quality Flag Program sounds like a great idea and hope more schools join.
