Thank you for sharing Debbie and thank you aafa for highlighting this importabt topic. I was just reading about a study done by USC in which the air pollution declined 20 percent over a 20 year period and it corresponded with a 20 percent decline in new cases of children's asthma-- which provides strong circumstantial evidence that reducing air pollution reduces illness. We are all sharing the air. I try very hard to limit travel to necessity only, drive a car with good gas mileage, and buy...

Thank you for this news. We must hold the airlines responsible for or safety and rights while traveling. I also have suffered from acute asthma since birth. I can no longer travel by air and have lost all rights due to the allowance of ESA on flights. I understand the rights of American with disabilities and the need for service animals This is a totally different issue. The last time I was on a flight, I heard a meow coming from a womans shoulder bag. She had a cat that was not seen. I can...

Hi, Dawn! You are certainly not alone, and AAFA realizes the struggle that you and so many, many members of our community have experienced. Currently, AAFA's advocacy team is pursuing a meeting with Airlines for America (the Airlines’ trade association) and the Department of Transportation to discuss the issue of pets on planes. AAFA also supports a bill in the US Senate, Air Carrier Access Amendments Act of 2019 (S.669), that is meant to protect the rights of passengers with disabilities in...

The opening statement is such a powerful message, "it is important for everyone to exercise, even if you have asthma." These children are so engaged and in touch with their symptoms. It is great to hear them talking about the preventive measures they are taking in their daily lives; I love how we can all use technology now to help too - like an app to measure pollen counts and air quality days.

Since when do pets take precedence over the health of humans? This is discrimination and is illegal. The Americans with Disabilities Act needs to be revised to address this discriminatory situation. Persons advocating for persons with asthma &/or allergies should call and/or write to: Civil Rights Division of US Dept of Justice, 950 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20530 USA, phone: 1-202-514-4609 and give them your story/case (asthma and/or allergy situation). Important to stress...

Kathy P - Please feel free to use my comments below. I am being excluded, which is discriminatory and illegal, by being unable to travel on trains, planes and unable to go to airline terminals, hotels/motels, buildings, hospitals, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. because I cannot be where dog/pets have been in the past year due to my allergy to dog/pet dander. This is a direct threat to my health by limiting my major life activity of breathing due to forcing me, in these enclosed areas, to...

Welcome, 805Native, and I can understand your frustration. The ADA does not regulate air transportation. Instead, the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) regulates flying. Currently, the ACAA regulations have a much broader definition of a “service animal" than the ADA does. You can read more about this on AAFA's blog post Share Your Stories About Animals on Planes and How They Affect People With Asthma and Allergies .

Unfortunately, the American Civil Liberties Union will not intervene in this matter with public transportation. The number you provided is a great course of action as is local state action.

I spoke with a representative at AAFA in December 2018. Although she said that AAFA has brought the perspectives of people with dander-sensitive disabilities to the Department of Transportation (DOT) (because the airline industry doesn't have to honor our ADA rights), AAFA does not, from what I can locate, seem to be doing any serious, aggressive public campaigns on our behalf. You are correct that AAFA seems to be primarily focused on food allergies; they also hide behind arbitrary "air...

What I dont like about it is that it made me feel less important to people than their pets and that for many years I also treated myself that way and put myself around animals that made me suffer so badly until I had a heart attack due to allergic eosinophils surrounding my heart and choking it, then I took it seriously but still others dont and I struggle to stay strong and remember what happened to me so that that never happens to me again and its difficult because friends get dogs and I...

Our family suffers from asthma triggered by fragrances and other chemicals. We are so happy you are informing people that wearing fragrance or products/clothing that emit fragrance are deadly for many people with asthma. We cannot go anywhere where we cannot leave if someone were to come in the room with "fragrance" known to be toxic chemicals. Most importantly, our hearts break for children who are trapped in a classsroom all day. Many laundry detergents/fabric softners emit persistent...

I’ve never thought of improving the air quality at my work because I don’t get the right support for anything so I didn’t bother asking. I don’t have food allergies but I have a lot of environmental allergies and I take Flonase, Zyrtec, Fluticasone, Eye drops, and Benadryl at night just to sleep. I’d probably be a great candidate for Xolair! I also have asthma. It’s been interesting to say the least!

Hi Jeana - I hope your emergency medicine helped. Cold weather can be an asthma trigger . Dry and/or cold air is a trigger for airway narrowing (bronchoconstriction). One thing that helps is to wrap a scarf loosely around your mouth and nose. That helps warm the air before it gets to your lungs. We've actually been talking about this on the support forum - Managing your Asthma and Allergies in the Winter .

Agreed, but I am afraid to take planes or long distance buses where the air circulates and also are you concerned about getting the flu virus from just touching the seat of your plane or using a pubic restroom, even if you have on a mask?

Totally understand that @Martha Anne ! The recirculated air and close proximity to potentially sick people was a huge concern. The mask definitely helped to keep me from touching my face and spreading germs there. I also had packs of wipes and hand sanitizer. I carefully wiped down my personal space - arm rests, back of the seat, tray table - before I sat down. Any time I went to the rest room, I slathered in hand sanitizer. Also wiped down things in the hotel rooms like door handles, TV...

Interesting. I wonder if adults receive any benefits from pretreating with inhaled steroids as far as preventing flare-ups-- or if they are like the children from this study and do not benefit? I sure with there were more non-steroid options that were efective and safe and less side effects. I know I am working hard with avoidance strategies and keeping indoor air quality in my home good.

The main triggers for my 6 year old son and I are pet dander from cats, dogs, rabbits. By living in a dander-free home, his environmental allergies and eczema are much more under control with no medication. I also do a lot to keep the indoor air quality good-- weekly washing of sheets in hot water, mattresses and pillows in zippered cases, hepa air purifier in room. When I was young, I did not take my pet allergies seriously and they developed into a serious problem. So I think it should be...

Very informative! I've just read the related article about humidity recently https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325474.php . We don't live in a wet climate, and my son suffered because of dry air. We bought an ultrasonic humidifier to help him breathe easier, but at that time we hadn't known that the humidity level should be 40-45%. So the humidity in our room was around 55%, and my son’s health has not only not improved, but has also worsened. Thanks to our Dr, he explained to us how...

So, if I fill out the form you send in a request to keep the AFA for me, with my information? No way! I didn't know the AAFA was a liberal site. I thought you were a neutral non-profit. I know more working people now without insurance because of the AFA. I now pay $1323.00 a month in premiums for a family of three. I used to pay half that. I personally hope and pray we find a better plan than the AFA. It's driving costs up and insurance companies out of business. The first year the US HAD...

Thank you Lynn for your courage on speaking up and bringing attention to the importance of creating a safe workspace for those with asthma. Breathing is an important life function and we can all benefit by reducing scents and chemicals that have lung irritants in them and keeping good indoor air quality. Many people are not educated sbout the toxins in many perfumes and scented products nor are they aware of the health effects using and wearing such products cause to so many individuals. I...

Humidity does make me feel like the air is heavier/denser to breath and therefore my asthma feels worse when it is humid especially in the hot weather. Interesting points in the article. Good reminder about how the changes from going between hot and cold air temperatures can cause problems.
