A sign of the times? ... I don't know if anyone else has observed any kind of trend locally, but I recently learned that my pulmonologist had closed his practice. I was visiting my regular doctor (whose office is on the same floor of the same building as my pulmo doc) and there was a letter taped to the glass door - the practice was closed with no forwarding address. When I asked my regular doctor what happened, he said that with the modern medications available for asthma, COPD, etc.,...
This line is the article..."Patients should also know that inhaling concentrated salts (hypertonic saline) has been proven to irritate the airways, causing cough and mucus, which can make asthma worse for some people." Yes, because hypertonic saline is used to induce a reaction for testing. That is a known. The water is what makes that happen. However, that does not happen to that degree with dry salt therapy. It may make your throat tickle, and cause you to cough up more mucus, but that is...
This was very interesting! I grew up on a farm in city limits with all kinds of animals and a smoker. I stayed sick as a kid. I wonder how much of it is genetic?
It is interesting....and the type of germs/bacteria in the dust seems to be the difference. And that seems to be a factor of how they run the farms and how things are sanitized.
WWe are most grateful for this article! My lungs do not know the difference between "essential"oils and other fragrances AKA chemicals. Please consider using the standard that NO smell is the good smell...we need to breathe unadulterated air! Rid our environment from chemical odors found in personal products, detergents/fabric softener, plug-ins, household cleaners and the like. Additionally, our children will benefit from a clean air environment!
Hi, JJTRE and welcome! I'm like you -- essential oils and scents can really trigger my asthma. We have a conversation going about how to deal with irritants that you might want to join in.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at the event and participated in the Thunderclap! We've shared some photos from the event in our photo album. Here are a couple:
My sincere apologizes @K8sMom2002 for the delay in getting back to you! Oh, they have been on big adventures this summer. We flew across the country to visit their great grandparents and grandparents! (It was our first time in 3 years that we were able to make a trip back to our "hometown" in Michigan). We then drove to Canada to get him and big brother some safe snacks! Went orange picking, bike rides, walks, and at home learning lessons.
They went well - Wahoo! Flights are so nerve wracking. We have only flown Southwest and since we have had good experiences, it has become our preferred airline. The first flight, there were a handful of people pre-boarding with us because they had peanut allergies too. Our second flight, the pilot told me that our previous flight also had a peanut allergy passenger so they did not serve peanuts on the flight before us. Southwest did not serve peanuts and since we were able to pre-board, I...
Good point, Peach! In years past, during our Easter service, our congregation was encouraged to purchase Easter lilies to honor the memory of a loved one.
What a lovely and wonderful way to celebrate Austin's life! My heart breaks for this family, but I am so amazed at how they have given Austin's life meaning. From one mother to another, thank you for turning your grief into action!
To all the Asthma sufferers, remember, if you intend to plant a tree in honour of the Asthma sufferer like Austin, plant a 'female' tree. Why? Because we are planting, male clonal, pollen producing, Asthma causing, native or non-native trees. Your "2018 Walk for Asthma Awareness", is again a great undertaking and to al participants, 'my hat goes of''. Support your AAFA, Asthma awareness. "Together we are stronger".
I pray for the family and for all those suffering with allergies and asthma. It is difficult to live with every day. It is difficult to watch and care for someone living with it. I wish I could snap my fingers and cure us all. But, education and awareness does save lives and help. Planting (female, allergy-friendly trees) helps. And research helps. I am so sorry to the family of Austin and the community, you are in our prayers.
I'm so sorry about your son leaving us. I to don't get relief from inhalers. I do need to comment on all those balloon releases, its really bad for our bird friends and causes a lot of pollution and danger to our wildlife.
What an incredible way to honor your beautiful son's life. Meredith, I am so inspired by your courage and strength to use this tragedy to bring awareness to others. You are one amazing mom. Thank you for sharing Austin's story, and yours. Blessings to your family as you work to protect the lives of other children with asthma in his honor.
Thank you for sharing Austin's story. Meredith, you are an inspiration. What an amazing way to create a legacy for your son. I am confident that with your strength, spirit and desire to help others, the MyHope4Austin Organization will have a far-reaching impact as it continues to grow. Many hugs and blessings to you and your family, Meredith!
Meredith, The MyHope4Austin organization is a wonderful way to honor your son’s kind and generous heart. Thank you for sharing your family’s story with us and for your work to increase asthma awareness and education in the community. Gratefully, Brenda
Meredith, you are truly an amazing mother. The MyHope4Austin Organization will not only keep the legacy of your son alive but it will also help others who have asthma. Having a loved one transition to heaven isn’t easy and it takes a champion and a loving, caring, kind, unselfish spirit like yours to turn emotions into something positive, educational and thoughtful. Thank you for sharing your story. You and your family are always in my prayers.
Dear Meredith, Thank you for so very much for sharing your son's story. My heart goes out to you and your family for the loss of your beautiful son and for turning his tragic loss into something positive that will help others living with asthma. Those of us with children who have asthma thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Warmly, Lynda
I lost my 40 year old son last week, a husband, father to three young sons, brother! And very loved son. Last year at this time he was hospitalized and intubated to help him breath. When he started suffering very bad symptoms last weekend he was reluctant to go to the hospital for fear they would intubate him. By the time he realized how serious it was he collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest. I am so broken and angry that he waited so long to try to get help. It is very hard to function.
Deborah, I am incredibly sorry to hear of your family's recent loss of your son. What a horrible thing to endure and go through! My heart grieves for you and your family. No mother ever ought to have to go through what you've been through. I can definitely understand your grief and your anger and your shock and bewilderment right now. I will be thinking of you and your family. We are here for you -- please feel free to start a new topic on our asthma support community so that we can offer...
Hugs @Deborah367 - my sincere condolences to you on the loss of your husband to this disease. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts. Your grief and anger is understandable. How can we help?
Dear Deborah, You have my deepest sympathy on your loss. Only another parent, like Meredith, can truly understand the loss of a child. Nothing we - or anyone - can say will make it easier. Nothing is going to replace your son, or make his passing less frustrating. But you may find that channeling your pain can help - not only for you, your family and friends, but all the other spouses, children, friends and colleagues who may be living with asthma, know someone intimately at risk, or may...
I think this is a great topic, and National Healthy School Days is a great way to educate children, parents, teachers, and the community on asthma and allergies. I think it would be worth noting the studies on second-hand dander and how it significantly affects children with asthma and allergies in schools (i.e. the study thst shows the more cat owners in classroom there are, the worse prognosis with kids with allergies and asthma). I think having individual lockers outside classrooms for...
Ironmom316, that us not cool I have seen dogs in my allergist office waitingvroom that are service dogs and I am like(to staff)--this is an allergist office waiting room and they wete like, well you can wait outside (to me). I went to a different allergist after that. If you cannot get a policy addressed correctly, switching out is always an option. I am super-allergic to dander and it developed into a serious chronic allergic disease after regularly being around dander that caused danage to...
My parents had a dog for a couple years before I was even born. As soon as I was brought home I started to show signs of allergies. Allergic to milk was the first one .By the time I was 3 years I was having asthma flared and had a severe attack that kept me in the hospital for about a week. The only thing that helped me was removing the pet from the home.
Thanks for the information. In many cases I have noticed people have allergies with these pests. Therefore it become mandatory to take preventive measure and eradicate them from the house asap!
Thank you these are great reminders! I always carry allergy-safe treats and any time my son or I gets candy that are no allergy safe I trade them out for the allergy safe ones.
Thanks @AS ! I'm definitely learning how to read my body better. There are subtle signs I was not realizing. That should hopefully allow me respond to asthma episodes before they become severe.
This is very interesting and, in terms of allergies and irritated nasal passages, I have read on numerous sites that diluted forms of certain essential oils (very diluted) can actually reduce the dust mite population in the laundry on clothes, on bedding, and even on furniture (versus using a product such as "Endust" which has chemicals). By chance have any essential oil companies (e.g. Do Terra) reached out to have some of their products or essential oils to see (when diluted and safer/not...
I have asthma. This morning I went to a friend’s home and they had their essential oils diffuser on. I don’t know which essential oil they were using, but within 5 minutes of breathing it my lungs felt like they were on fire and I couldn’t breath. Once I got outside I started to improve. I had to use albuterol because I was still struggling to breathe. I’ve always heard positive things about essential oils, but after doing a little research today, I’ve decided not to diffuse them in my home.
Hugs, Holly! How are you feeling now? I think your advice is very wise. Each person with asthma is unique with unique triggers, and it's important to avoid any asthma triggers when possible. There are things that I can be around, and it's no big deal for me ... and then there are things that other people with asthma can be around, but it's a real problem for my asthma.
