Thank you so much for advocating for asthma/allergy sufferers regarding animals on planes. People with pets do not seem to realize that it is a matter of life or death for an allergy sufferer, like me, to be exposed to pet dander. Please let me know how I may help with this effort. Also, I had to cancel my plans to two family weddings this past year, sadly, because the hotels offering accommodations for the wedding guests, as well as other hotels in the same towns, had "pet friendly"...
Thanks for sharing your experience with hotels and other accommodations @Debsie . AAFA continues to educate and raise awareness about the seriousness of asthma and allergies and for advocates for access.
It says directly at the top how the public can submit comments. What is the AAFA planning to do about this? I believe that the definition of service animal needs to be universal and that "emotional support animals" need to be eliminated. That said, if I can't have anything under my feat upon take off and landing, how is an animal, however well trained, going to react during a true flight emergency?
Hi Chinarider10! Welcome to the AAFA forums! Thank you for sharing your comments. We are carefully monitoring this and will have more information coming soon.
Oh my gosh YES !!! Travelling with Asthma... Animals checked onto planes have "bumped" me off intercontinental flights a number of times (even if I had reserved my ticket weeks or months before the animal owner!), as I don't want to have an acute asthma attack half-way across the Atlantic. I could easily die. To add insult to injury, no compensation has ever been forthcoming from the airline for a hotel when the next flight was the next day..... If airlines require animal owners to submit...
I just want to thank the AAFA for their advocacy regarding the pet dander issue. I have allergic asthma and highly allergic to cat, dog, and horse dander. So much so, that my immunologist prescribed me an EpiPen after my allergy test results were revealed. Also, a few years ago, after being exposed in an airplane cabin to a dog that was shaking and being bounced around on someone's lap, I had to stop flying to the East Coast to avoid the dog dander allergen that triggers my asthma.
I cannot thank you enough. This is what I have been waiting for. This is why I joined AAFA and became an advocate. Please advise the outcome of the meeting and if there are any follow up meetings scheduled.
Hi @Dawn Graziano , There will be a public comment meeting sometime this fall (date has not been announced). We are preparing for our submission. We will be sharing a survey with our members soon - the information we collect will be shared with DOT. Additionally, we are meeting with the airline industry directly as well. We will keep everyone updated!
Wow, I was quite surprised and over joyed to have an advocate for those of us who have allergic asthma triggered by dog and other pet dander. Traveling has become quite difficult the last several years due to the direct contact with allergens that trigger sinus infections and asthma. Thank you so much.
Hello to my fellow advocates and sufferers. Let's keep this conversation going. I have been unable to travel by air for the last 4 years due to airline polices regarding service animals and emotional support pets. We must be considered and or rights protected as well. Let's keep the conversation going and hear from more of you that have been affected. Let On Tue, Oct 8, 2019 at 3:26 PM Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America < support@aafa.org> wrote:
Thank you, I have been dealing with allergies for a few decades and was diagnosed with asthma about 15 years ago. My allergy/asthma condition has gotten progressively worse the last 10 years.
Me too, been unable to fly from the west coast to the east coast since I had a terrible allergy/asthma attack on a plane flight in 2011. The attack was triggered by a dog (dander) in the cabin that was near the on board restroom I has to use.
Wonderfu! Thank you for advocating for those of us with a & a. I see more emotional support animals and this makes me nervous, especially with regard to planes and similar enclosed, public spaces. I am highly allergic to cats, to the point that my lungs begin to close up after about 2 hours of exposure. I am seeing these animals now in so many places, with no regard for the many people who are allergic to them. There needs to be some safeguard for those of us whose health is threatened...

I receive your E mail and get a lot of information though your email. thank you so much .This types of program should be establish in our nation which directly affect the asthma patience.our nation is known as the developing nation so that air are polluted day by day.So it should be control by such type of program.I am student of social work from Dibyabhumi Multiple College, kupondol, lalitpur I hope my email response you very soon. Thank you Manoj Magar
This is why companies of a business for mass people I have said like hotels Uber Lyft Taxi Planes This is example about Uber's (Btw nothing against this guy so don't every want these people to get introubke and Amit not just them it's tooons of people, there needs to be law for boundary about air and containimant air in public spaces aka place of business) These places are not pet stores. This puppy is sooooo cute and sweet but that is why it is ignored But I see and cannot filter my Uber...
Thank you for such a great article, a lot of useful info. I will be glad if someone could advise me air purifier for smoke from the list? I never used one, but decided to give it a try. My budget around ~150$. Share your experience if you ever used one. Thank you.
Ult1Mat3x, based on the link you had, I would suggest talking to your doctor and beginning your search with the Aeromax 300 . It's the only one on your list that is asthma & allergy friendly® CERTIFIED. The asthma & allergy friendly® Certification program helps people make informed purchases for a healthier home. The program tests household products against strict standards. If products pass certain tests, they earn the CERTIFIED asthma & allergy friendly® mark.
We had our air ducts cleaned. Considerable difference in the dust build up and in my health! Air quality really does make a difference, get those regular cleanings.
Good job carrying your meds! And what a cutie pie! Welcome to posting! Introduce yourself and tell us a little about how asthma affects your life and your child's .
Thank you, @Kathy P His older brother who also has asthma & allergies and tends to have more problems keeping it controlled. He has always carried his meds so this is all he knows. It is always so precious seeing them be so attentive to one another.
#Asthma and Allergies has changed my Life as an Adult. # Allergic Asthma allergic to grasses, year around trees, smoke, dust, strong odors feathers etc. causing inflammation of the throat and No oxygen. PLAN OF ACTION 1) emergency medicine with me at all times rescue inhaler Epipen, take medicine regular, see your doctor, use the air conditioner in autos and home, Hepa filter for house and portable home hepa filter, use the breathing treatments if needed, Wear mask if needed, take flu shot...
Patients were heard! The Graham-Cassidy bill is defeated. Pre-existing conditions, lifetime caps and other protections for patients are protected. Thank you to all of our advocates for sharing your stories and taking action. We hope the next step to improving our health care system puts patients’ needs front and center and that our leadership listens and fixes the items that are still barriers to care.
this has not proven to be true in our home. We had a dog since before my daughter (asthmatic) was born, and when she was tested for many types of airborne allergies, dogs were the ONLY thing that came back red flagged! Shows the research changes all the time in what they tell you. Be careful telling people this info! Could do more harm than good!
I totally understand your thoughts ... we've lived with pets since before DD came home, and she has allergies and eczema and asthma. I think it's important for parents to talk to their allergists and get the recommendations for their individual situation. Research, however, can show us the big picture and possibly lead to more understanding.
Thank you for sharing a window into your world, Deb! You are an absolutely amazing member of our Asthma and Allergic Disease Support Online Community !
Thank you for sharing Debbie and thank you aafa for highlighting this importabt topic. I was just reading about a study done by USC in which the air pollution declined 20 percent over a 20 year period and it corresponded with a 20 percent decline in new cases of children's asthma-- which provides strong circumstantial evidence that reducing air pollution reduces illness. We are all sharing the air. I try very hard to limit travel to necessity only, drive a car with good gas mileage, and buy...
No. You shouldn't. It is basically abuse to the allergic person. I have been the allergic person and it got so bad that after chronic exposure even doing all the strategies above and with antihistamines I developed asthma symtoms and shortly after went to the hospital because I thought I was having an asthma atrack turns out it was a heart attack caused by allergic blood cells called eosinophils surrounding my heart and choking it. I was diagnosed with a severe chronic allergic disease. My...
Marcia, that's a great question. I think that the replacement will help other things -- like the structural integrity of the pillow. After two years of sleeping on something like a pillow, it may not be offering you the best night's sleep.
The bedroom should be kept allergen and asthma trigger free. It may be difficult, but it is important to try! When we are lying down, our breathing problems often worsen. That is why we should have a clean and safe bedroom. We do need to get a good night of rest!
Thanks for sharing, it's so stressful to watch your child go through this and all so familiar as to how it was for me when young. I'd be fine but never realized how fast an attack could come on. My mom would listen to my breathing and count how many breaths or how fast my chest was going up and down. I was taken off of dairy and wheat, it did make a difference for me to do that. One thing that helps me now is to have a portable nebulizer that can plug into the wall or in the car, so I...
Given these terrible statistics, why isn't AAFA and CAPP aggressively working to stop this dangerous and potentially deadly problem of dogs and other pets being brought into public buildings and stores and in public buildings? These children aren't just confined to their homes. Why not designate/certify stores and buildings as "asthma and allergy friendly"? In fact, stores, businesses and public transportation companies are violating the ADA rights of people with asthma, allergies and...
