Maxmakc, that's great that salt room therapy has helped your daughter so much! And congrats to her being able to run cross-country now! I recently started biking and am learning how critical it is to have my asthma controlled. One of the hesitations that many doctors have about salt therapy is that it has not been well studied in a scientific way. There are lots of anecdotal stories of how it helping people. But there is also the potential of it irritating the airways. Since there are no...
This was very interesting! I grew up on a farm in city limits with all kinds of animals and a smoker. I stayed sick as a kid. I wonder how much of it is genetic?
My sincere apologizes @K8sMom2002 for the delay in getting back to you! Oh, they have been on big adventures this summer. We flew across the country to visit their great grandparents and grandparents! (It was our first time in 3 years that we were able to make a trip back to our "hometown" in Michigan). We then drove to Canada to get him and big brother some safe snacks! Went orange picking, bike rides, walks, and at home learning lessons.
Thank you these are great reminders! I always carry allergy-safe treats and any time my son or I gets candy that are no allergy safe I trade them out for the allergy safe ones.
I have to say that I am very disappointed by the response by AAFA.. It is not enough to simple be "distanced" from an animal on the plane, In addition to the danger of being subjected to animal hair and dander on seats and carpets, these dangers are also circulated through the aircraft ventilation system, thus making distancing ineffective. We are not just in danger from the current flight we are boarding but the multiple, previous flights that have accommodated animals.Planes are being...
Hi Dawn, I am sorry you were disappointed in our response. We are continuing to work with the DOT as part of a disability working group and agree that all passengers have a right to safe travel. It is incredibly challenging to accommodate multiple disabilities on an aircraft, but we feel that this rule will significantly reduce the fraudulent use of emotional support animals. We will continue to engage with the DOT to ensure equal accommodation for the asthma and allergy community. Best...
Thank you for this news. We must hold the airlines responsible for or safety and rights while traveling. I also have suffered from acute asthma since birth. I can no longer travel by air and have lost all rights due to the allowance of ESA on flights. I understand the rights of American with disabilities and the need for service animals This is a totally different issue. The last time I was on a flight, I heard a meow coming from a womans shoulder bag. She had a cat that was not seen. I can...
Thanks everyone for your feedback! Lots of great info. @Dawn Graziano - AAFA is continuing to advocate for safer travel. We can hopefully provide an update soon. @ajeet kaur - here is a recent blog about dust mite allergy myths . Included are some tips on reducing your exposure. Is there something specific about quality of life you thinking of? @Deborah Bartlett - AAFA has a page about medicine assistance programs . Thanks for the feedback on wanting more blogs about new treatments. Can you...
Hi Kathy! I had an idea 💡. Maybe, during certain blog posts that may be about certain types of food allergies...such as wheat, beef, eggs, dairy or intolerance to gluten, a recipe or two that would be safe for those particular people to make and consume. Such as a homemade soup...not beef noodle, but chicken noodle. Or substituting soy or chicken or beans for beef in chili. I think people would feel safe and confident to make and consume recipes posted here! Thanks for listening! Debbie 😊
The bedroom should be kept allergen and asthma trigger free. It may be difficult, but it is important to try! When we are lying down, our breathing problems often worsen. That is why we should have a clean and safe bedroom. We do need to get a good night of rest!
What I dont like about it is that it made me feel less important to people than their pets and that for many years I also treated myself that way and put myself around animals that made me suffer so badly until I had a heart attack due to allergic eosinophils surrounding my heart and choking it, then I took it seriously but still others dont and I struggle to stay strong and remember what happened to me so that that never happens to me again and its difficult because friends get dogs and I...
The school has a para assigned to her in the classroom. They follow her asthma plan to the T. Text me frequently. Check her pulse ox all the time (she has one she carries with her). Keep her out of physical activity when needed. They don't really give her any other accomodations. Not sure what they could. I agree that's a great idea. Not sure what is available. I know the school is very supportive. She doesn't have any allergies. She has had numerous allergy panels and they have checked her...
I am an Athletic Trainer - I provide medical coverage for athletics. My athletes help keep me safe from the rest of the kids spraying perfumes and body spray...
Thanks! This kid? She's tough as shoe leather -- it would take more than asthma to knock her down! I wish I had half her grit and determination to get through tough times.
Hi all - Thanks for the compliments. I have not had to evacuate, thank goodness! I have a friend in Florida who had to evacuate recently. As soon as she knew a potential evacuation was coming found a hotel in a safe area that would accept her animals and always has emergency kits packed for her, her mom and her animals. I find that more and more emergency shelters are accepting pets, at least in the Northeast. Many states have disaster response teams specifically devoted to animals who...
