    I totally understand your thoughts ... we've lived with pets since before DD came home, and she has allergies and eczema and asthma. I think it's important for parents to talk to their allergists and get the recommendations for their individual situation. Research, however, can show us the big picture and possibly lead to more understanding.

    This is very true! I didn't really understand it myself until my own asthma because more severe. Have you seen AAFA's Severe ASTHMA Care course ? It's a free online course to help people with severe asthma. As you said, treatments alone don't always keep asthma in control. There is also identifying and reducing exposure to triggers.

I was just reading about a study done by USC in which the air pollution declined 20 percent over a 20 year period and it corresponded with a 20 percent decline in new cases of children's asthma-- which provides strong circumstantial evidence that reducing air pollution reduces illness.     No. You shouldn't. It is basically abuse to the allergic person. I have been the allergic person and it got so bad that after chronic exposure even doing all the strategies above and with antihistamines I developed asthma symtoms and shortly after went to the hospital because I thought I was having an asthma atrack turns out it was a heart attack caused by allergic blood cells called eosinophils surrounding my heart and choking it.     Marcia, that's a great question. I think that the replacement will help other things -- like the structural integrity of the pillow. After two years of sleeping on something like a pillow, it may not be offering you the best night's sleep.

    The bedroom should be kept allergen and asthma trigger free. It may be difficult, but it is important to try! When we are lying down, our breathing problems often worsen. That is why we should have a clean and safe bedroom. We do need to get a good night of rest!

    Thankfully my asthma has been mild up until recently. This was one of the last big things I did before my asthma went out of control and became severe. It has taken about eight months but I am finally close to getting my asthma controlled.     Thanks for sharing, it's so stressful to watch your child go through this and all so familiar as to how it was for me when young. I'd be fine but never realized how fast an attack could come on. My mom would listen to my breathing and count how many breaths or how fast my chest was going up and down. I was taken off of dairy and wheat, it did make a difference for me to do that.     There are other hard surface alternatives, from linoleum (perhaps the ultimate “green” flooring) to tile to vinyl. It’s even possible to get hard-wearing and attractive flooring made from recycled tires. I’d like to see a true comparison between all the options, pros and cons, and include such possible irritant/triggers as off-gasing from padding and carpet materials.

    I share your frustration. I have been asking the federal government to strengthening the ADA so that there is some oversight. When it was enacted years ago, there were fewer conditions which used service dogs. The number of conditions covered has grown dramatically and the abuse of the law has spiraled out of control. There is no scientific evidence that some of these conditions are helped by service dogs, and there is no regulation of organizations which claim to train service dogs to work...

    The problem is that AAFA is not aggressively fighting this problem of pet dogs and emotional support pets in public buildings without let up. They need to make this a prominent focal point of allergy and asthma prevention. This is perhaps the primary health risk to people with dander-sensitive asthma and allergies, yet it is virtually ignored publicly by AAFA and other so-called health support programs!

    I agree that there needs to be more emphasis on animal allergies. I have asked the president of the AAFA, Kenny Mendez, for more aid in battling the onslaught of animals in public places. I have been told by the AAFA that they have limited resources, and food allergies have taken precedence. I am concerned now that service dogs are being trained to detect food allergens, basically pitting one allergy group against another. If others on this board speak directly to the president of the AAFA...

    I spoke with a representative at AAFA in December 2018. Although she said that AAFA has brought the perspectives of people with dander-sensitive disabilities to the Department of Transportation (DOT) (because the airline industry doesn't have to honor our ADA rights), AAFA does not, from what I can locate, seem to be doing any serious, aggressive public campaigns on our behalf.     @Jen We are really good about using our exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom. Also, we purchased a dehumidifier this summer, which has really helped keep our humidity down. Without it the house sits around 60-70% humidity in the fall and spring. We also redid our kitchen in the beginning of the year and discovered a lot of mold behind sink and under dishwasher. Next are the bathrooms! (We live in a old house)

    What an amazing and inspiring story! I have asthma and environmental allergies and am active-sometimes I have to limit my activities outside during certain months so I don’t go into a flare..happens too often for me but I try to keep my lungs in shape too! I keep trying to push myself.

    I have been on Ventolin for 7 years due to smoke inhalation scaring my lungs. I am pron to bronchitis and this is what my doctor has put me on. This year we have been denied 3 times from CVS stating FDA ruling. We have tried proair and proventin and they do not produce the results the doctor wants. I will not pay for something that does not work just because the insurance company says so. I can not afford $50 for one inhaler when I was getting 3 every 4 months for $35. I will go with out and...

AAFA has a blog with some tips for what you can do if you can't afford your asthma medicine .     That is so ... Angering... That hypoallergenic can be used as it is! It is like a blatant lie basically. I am so glad that Certified Allergy and Asthma friendly IS actually regulated and based on science-- definitely will be my go-to mark when I am shopping from now on.

    The main triggers for my 6 year old son and I are pet dander from cats, dogs, rabbits. By living in a dander-free home, his environmental allergies and eczema are much more under control with no medication. I also do a lot to keep the indoor air quality good-- weekly washing of sheets in hot water, mattresses and pillows in zippered cases, hepa air purifier in room.
