Hugs, PinkLadyCha ... bullying hurts! Is this at school or out in your neighborhood? Why not start a thread or topic about this, so we can brainstorm and try to help?
Hi Jeana, cold weather has a lot to do with Javans Asthma. Matter of fact, the change of weather period. When it rains and then gets cold, or when it’s hot and then rain, or when it gets cold alone. Javan body also heats up fast so if we cover him up in layers, we teach him to take it off in school if he gets hot and to not wait too late until he sweats because then the wind may hit him and he will get sick. Have your husband go with you to the doctor and ask the doctor questions while he’s ...
will it have a counter? there is an issue with having hundreds of students with asthma in our school system and no counter in the back of the rescue inhaler.....do we guess if there is enough medication left? the inhalers go back and forth with the students in the high school so you don't know how many times they are being used, they can be out of medication or close to running out and we won't know until there is a problem.....with the younger ones, the parent usually brings in the inhaler...
While Georgia didn't make the honor roll list, I was pleased to see that many of the items on the check list were things that my DD's school already does.
If you are allergic to cats or dogs and own one: "It should be recommended that the animal be removed from the patient's environment, as avoidance is believed to be the most effective measure for the management of dog and cat allergy." According to consensus https://onlinelibrary.wiley.co...ll/10.1111/all.13391

Hi Sillysally.. Yes these comments on this particular post pop out reverse than the others with the oldest comment at the bottom and the newer ones at the top. It confused me too because I made that cat/dog comment a while back before your comments. Awesome on homemade products! I usually buy 7th Generation products or use vinegar water with a few drops of essential oils. If you ever want to share your cleaning recipes, Id love to hear them! I am really trying to keep up on all my cleaning...
Hi, SillySally! Welcome to AAFA's online community! We have several members who struggle with the same things you do, and they have great ideas ... you can start a new topic with your excellent questions. Or you can find older discussion "threads" where people have already talked about how they manage these triggers.

Yeah, the default on blog comments is "newest" first. But you can change that for yourself. There is an option between the reply box and the start of the comments to change how they are ordered:

This is really great. Growing up, my elementary school had mold issues and they continued to grow until my siblings went years later and by then so many people were getting ill that they shut that school down. If they give schools the tools they need to improve indoor air (awareness and money to make the changes happen), so many children and families will be positively affected.
Sounds great. May I also suggest some investigating and some stricter enforcement procedures on H.U.D.S. smoking ban that is a failure in many cities across this country. Providing a clean teaching invironment is important but many children will return home to often worse indoor air quality where they live. To truly help the health of all children, they need healthy air at home as well as school. ailurimprovementon
Finally a serious legislative action on this problem. We all know air quality in schools is horrible and this is now becoming an even bigger issue with Covid-19. There should be good air purifiers in every school.
Food allergies and asthma can be tricky to manage, but my DD has not just survived -- she's thrived! In the fall, she'll be starting her freshman year at college at a school five hours away. I credit AAFA's AAFA's online asthma community and their Kids With Food Allergies community with helping me to help her negotiate life with her food allergies and asthma. Thank you, AAFA!
Hi Debbie! I am a mother of 4 who found out that asthma was larger than I ever realized a few years back when I landed myself in ICU 2 days before Christmas. I missed my son’s 3 year old Christmas - one which most parents agree is the BEST Christmas ever. I knew I could never get those moments back... so instead of doubling down in the face of adversity, I decided to accomplish my goals. So I went back to school and finished my bachelors degree. It was tough physically going onto campus,...
I love it! You've poured your heart (and lungs!) into making life better for you and your family ... we'd love to hear more of your story on our community online forums! What accommodations were you able to get from your school in order to help you along the way? You can join us on our discussion about what people say when you tell them you have asthma or allergies .
Hi K8SMOM2002! Funny you should mention accommodations in school... I actually did not receive any asthma specific accommodations at school simply because I did not ask for them. And to be honest, I did not even know I was allowed to receive accommodations for having asthma. I am also dyslexic so I received extended time on my math exams, but never did it cross my mind that I could also get accommodations for asthma as well. Can you maybe tell me more? I really would like to go on to get my...
Kimberly, read up on the Americans with Disabilities Act, and contact the school you are thinking of applying to and speak to whomever is responsible for overseeing their ADA-compliance. Remember ADA is only applicable if the school accepts federal money (but I believe that includes loans and grants to students). I wouldn’t create much of a paper trail yet - I’d call and ask the questions. Remember your Congressional Representative or Senator also can be good sources of help. Believe it or...
Thank you, Melanie! I think I have decided to go back to school for my masters... I mean, why not?!?! Once that’s complete, then maybe law school 💕. The sky is MY limit!
Its ridiculous that MD do have no protection for our childern. My daugther has asthma bad especially in September this year it was the 1st day. Plus yes our school systems is so not right. They failed my baby 2 two but over turned the last one. Then last year ask if she wants to go in her correct grade in October no this should of been offered before school started. Crazy no implenations or help.
Hello Godmyfour. Welcome to these community discussions where very difficult questions can be asked and where smart and compassionate people share their best answers. My own children are past school but I can imagine how hard it is for you to send yours to school with so much uncertainty. I guess for me the first thing to know is what IS the COVID plan at my school? Is it the best available? What are school staff doing at your children's school? Are you satisfied you know how to play your...
