They went well - Wahoo! Flights are so nerve wracking. We have only flown Southwest and since we have had good experiences, it has become our preferred airline. The first flight, there were a handful of people pre-boarding with us because they had peanut allergies too. Our second flight, the pilot told me that our previous flight also had a peanut allergy passenger so they did not serve peanuts on the flight before us. Southwest did not serve peanuts and since we were able to pre-board, I...
Thank you AAFA and all who contribute. Asthma and allergies are confusing and scary diseases, and facing it alone or with those who are not educated, experienced, or familiar is even scarier. I have had so much love and support since joining the community forum and receiving information and resources through your organization. Thank you!
Just a comment Patient Centered Care (the term) is also used for socialized medicine. If you are unlucky enough to have managed care...that is what it is. Less access to doctors and medicines. Everyone in the 'clinic' knows all about you...they can discuss you. I'm a privacy nut I don't care for sharing of my medical info without my permission. Just know this term is used for more things than one.
Thank you for your comment. The IOM (Institute of Medicine) defines patient-centered care as: “Providing care that is respectful of, and responsive to, individual patient preferences, needs and values, and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions.” Thanks!
Thank you Lynda Mitchell! I developed food allergies at age 13 after a major intestinal surgery for ulcerative colitis. My son has had food allergies from at least age 3. I had difficulty handling my own food allergies when I was a teenager and then in college and had many ER visits as my reactions progressively got worse. So when my son had allergies, I found a lot of great information and printables online and love to show my son the pictures from events to show him that we are not alone...
Thank you @Shae! I really appreciate your comments and I'm glad KFA and AAFA have been of help to you and your family. I was and still am a firm believer in patient empowerment and being the best advocates for ourselves and our families with regard to our health care. Best wishes to you and thank you again! Me too, been unable to fly from the west coast to the east coast since I had a terrible allergy/asthma attack on a plane flight in 2011. The attack was triggered by a dog (dander) in the cabin that was near the on board restroom I has to use.
Wonderfu! Thank you for advocating for those of us with a & a. I see more emotional support animals and this makes me nervous, especially with regard to planes and similar enclosed, public spaces. I am highly allergic to cats, to the point that my lungs begin to close up after about 2 hours of exposure. I am seeing these animals now in so many places, with no regard for the many people who are allergic to them. There needs to be some safeguard for those of us whose health is threatened...
Yes, Dawn is right. I know it seems easier to claim distance will help but dog dander is sooooo airborne and light and accumulates. I wouldn't be able to go on a plane with a dog on board.
Way to shred dude! How do you manage your asthma when in the water? I've had issues when I was really short of breath trying to paddle out even if I pretreated prior to grabbing the board.
Mdashiquennobi, I hope that eczema will be cured one day, too! I know it's a frustrating disorder to have to deal with! Barbara, so glad you don't have eczema/atopic dermatitis to deal with! AAFA's blog contains news and updates related to asthma, allergies and skin disorders. You can control the level of emails you receive from the AAFA community. I agree that there needs to be more emphasis on animal allergies. I have asked the president of the AAFA, Kenny Mendez, for more aid in battling the onslaught of animals in public places. I have been told by the AAFA that they have limited resources, and food allergies have taken precedence. I am concerned now that service dogs are being trained to detect food allergens, basically pitting one allergy group against another. If others on this board speak directly to the president of the AAFA...
I spoke with a representative at AAFA in December 2018. Although she said that AAFA has brought the perspectives of people with dander-sensitive disabilities to the Department of Transportation (DOT) (because the airline industry doesn't have to honor our ADA rights), AAFA does not, from what I can locate, seem to be doing any serious, aggressive public campaigns on our behalf. You are correct that AAFA seems to be primarily focused on food allergies; they also hide behind arbitrary "air...
While Georgia didn't make the honor roll list, I was pleased to see that many of the items on the check list were things that my DD's school already does.
I love those ideas, AAFA and Deb! There are so many cool (non-traditional) gift options out there that can be fun to celebrate and dont bother asthma/allergies: video games, board games, DVDs, or books also make great gifts.
