It’s better now . I didn’t realize watermelon crosses with grass . I know it does with latex and also ragweed. Also the list make sense since I can’t meet broccoli and cauliflower.
I just ordered a new mattress encasement (zippered) and 2 pillow encasements from AAFA's list here-- my old-one's zipper broke (it was not one from aafa's list and it was kinda cheap and had a plastic-y feel and was tough to clean) so that is why this time I wanted an AAFA certified one. I cant wait for it to come!
Thank you for bringing attention to this important issue! Is there anything we can do to help advocate? This is a constant stressor for me as I have severe asthma triggered by cat and dog dander and flying in the states (animals aren't allowed in planes in the same way in other countries) has become harrowing for me. Thanks!
Hi Hillary H - AAFA has a meeting with the DOT Disability Advocacy Working group coming up at the end of June. We will share any updates after that meeting.
I’ve had oas to apples, pears, all stone fruit, almonds as well as hazelnuts since my childhood. And it’s gotten progressively worse. I used to be able to eat these foods cooked or baked, now this is not even possible anymore. I got a blood test a few years ago and only hazelnut came back positive. But I know when eating raw apple my throat closes up. I have to carry an epi pen with me now. Any chance it could get better? I still get dreams of eating apples.
@KathyP I recently had issues cutting potatoes where I got itchy hands and a rash and hives up my hands , neck and chest . Doctor thinks that it’s the oral allergy syndrome strikes again with the grass and ragweed as main culprit . You remember the incident with the tomatoes ? She said there in the same family so it would make Sense . Also I’m seeing a Gastro specialist for some tests and he said when your digestive system is inflamed the more likely you can have these bizarre allergy attacks .
Tommy, my 8 year old, has both food allergies and OAS to a lot if things that cross-react with his pollen allergies. The difference with his OAS is that some times of year he can eat the foods just fine (like cucumber which cross-reacts with his ragweed allergy) but as soon as ragweed season comes it gets him itchy (especially under his arms). Then only if his ragweed allergy is bothering him or flared he will react to sunflower seed which stinks because he loves sunbutter and jelly...
Hey Ben - that's interesting that raw potatoes are causing a contact reaction on the your hands. And yes, potatoes and tomatoes are both in the nightshade family. Good luck with the gastro appointment and tests. I hope you will check in on the forums to let us know how that goes.
Its ridiculous that MD do have no protection for our childern. My daugther has asthma bad especially in September this year it was the 1st day. Plus yes our school systems is so not right. They failed my baby 2 two but over turned the last one. Then last year ask if she wants to go in her correct grade in October no this should of been offered before school started. Crazy no implenations or help.
What is the best room air purifier for removing mold and dust from indoor air. I suffer from asthma and am looking to purchase for the upcoming winter months. Mold and dust are my primary allergies. Also how can you determine if there is mold in your home? I have a bedroom where windows were replaced several years ago and has a musty smell.
I get allergy shots to help prevent my asthma from triggering . But my allergy/asthma Dr is closed right now . So how do I get my shot On Fri, Mar 20, 2020 at 1:54 PM Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America < support@aafa.org> wrote:
It is really useful information. I have also heard that there are apps these days to watch out for different types of pollen spread. I heard of a few like WebMD, weatherbug, climacell, Zyrtec, etc. Do people use these apps, and are they effective?
Welcome GretchenB and thank you for joining us here! There are comments about Climacell in How are you REALLY Doing? Feel free to add to the conversation. Best!
Thank you for the update! It is very good and should lessen the amount if problems for many, but sadly does not quite allow me to travel yet. At least it is acknowledged that the airlines do not accommodate individuals with dander allergies and asthma, and that the resulting risk to us can be life threatening asthma attacks, worsening of severe chronic conditions that involve multiple vital organs and are also life-threatening, increased need for high-risk medication use with detrimental...
Thank you so much from all of us who suffer and for this update ! I too have to worry about traveling with animals, where I can stay, hotel, rental home that a cat /dog has not stayed in. I get extremely sick for a long period of time. Definitely ruins a vacation or going to see my kids in other States. Michelle Keen
Thank you for your continued advocacy on this. It does seem like we need to keep working on even more accommodations as I'm worried this still won't change the fact that more and more people are bringing animals onto planes, allowing them to sit on seats etc. Could we make any headway by looking at the root cause of the issue which is that the reason people want to bring their pets with them in the cabin is that they fear putting them in cargo? The main reasons they worry about the cargo...
Always a good reminder! How do you clean outdoor and/or indoor trees? I hosed my outdoor house plant (A Norfolk Pine-- it isn't a true pine so Im hoping it isn't adding to my allergy issues like true pines might). I hosed it off really good and let it dry under my carport for a few days before I brought it in. It can hold small, light decorations/ornaments. I purchased a small fake tabletop tree this year. Im thinking each year I will use a wet soapy cloth and wipe each branch with it as I...
Shea - we do something similar with our live tree each year. We bring it home (this year it was curbside delivery!) and set it up on the deck outside in the tree stand. Then we give it a good shake (I stay in the house for this) and hose it down. We let it dry overnight before bringing it into the house. I'm not allergic to pine so it's more pollens and mold that might be clinging to the branches/needles. This seems to be sufficient for me. For artificial trees, off season storage is going...
