I'm really sorry to hear about your family's allergies and asthma, as well. It is so scary, especially with children. We have multiple family members with various allergies and four that have/had life-threatening asthmatic reactions to dander. I am here to try to find other like-minded sufferers to help us mobilize a legal effort to put a stop to this out of control problem of dogs and other animals in public buildings, stores and on public transportation. It seems like the dander issue is...
I agree that there needs to be more emphasis on animal allergies. I have asked the president of the AAFA, Kenny Mendez, for more aid in battling the onslaught of animals in public places. I have been told by the AAFA that they have limited resources, and food allergies have taken precedence. I am concerned now that service dogs are being trained to detect food allergens, basically pitting one allergy group against another. If others on this board speak directly to the president of the AAFA...
I spoke with a representative at AAFA in December 2018. Although she said that AAFA has brought the perspectives of people with dander-sensitive disabilities to the Department of Transportation (DOT) (because the airline industry doesn't have to honor our ADA rights), AAFA does not, from what I can locate, seem to be doing any serious, aggressive public campaigns on our behalf. You are correct that AAFA seems to be primarily focused on food allergies; they also hide behind arbitrary "air...
Jade has dealt with food and environmental allergies since she was first diagnosed at 9 months old. Now, 7 years old, despite the many hospital visits, the daily routine of medications, the limited time outdoors, and the missed birthday parties due to allergies, she is a warrior! She helps bake her own "JadeSafe" foods, carries her own medical bag, and loves her new VogMasks that allows her to spend more time outdoors and with friends.
I’ve never thought of improving the air quality at my work because I don’t get the right support for anything so I didn’t bother asking. I don’t have food allergies but I have a lot of environmental allergies and I take Flonase, Zyrtec, Fluticasone, Eye drops, and Benadryl at night just to sleep. I’d probably be a great candidate for Xolair! I also have asthma. It’s been interesting to say the least!
She IS a champ! What sort of accommodations does her school give her to help her manage her asthma? That would be a great new topic to start on our Asthma Support community , by the way! And if you need more help with school issues, our sister site, Kids With Food Allergies, has a school planning center that can help parents managing food allergies and/or asthma .
The school has a para assigned to her in the classroom. They follow her asthma plan to the T. Text me frequently. Check her pulse ox all the time (she has one she carries with her). Keep her out of physical activity when needed. They don't really give her any other accomodations. Not sure what they could. I agree that's a great idea. Not sure what is available. I know the school is very supportive. She doesn't have any allergies. She has had numerous allergy panels and they have checked her...
That's awesome! on not letting asthma rule her life! I always tried to do that with my kids with regard to their food allergies and asthma. It can hard some days, but so worth it!
We can expect an abundance of cross-reactivity of Birch tree pollen, with other trees such as, the alder (Alnus glutinosa) - hazel (Corylus avellana) or hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) are examples, this year because of the changes in our environmental temperatures. Food cross-reactivity of Birch and apples are known, but..... there are many more. See your Dr. or Allergist for up-to-date information. Sue C. Killian wrote an excellent book about allergy and cross-reactivity.
i am new to all this computer stuff what does this do am allergic to scents cigarette smoke food dyes and colors , alot of cleaners and perfumes, have hayfever and do not live in a bubble yet
New to this blog and I have to say I am relieved to know that all the issues I have been having with food is real. I have always had issues with eating bananas. The past few months I have been having oral reactions to foods. I think it is bell peppers. I am thankful to have found this blog. Thanks.
AAFA, would you please intensify and increase the advocacy efforts to get dogs out of public buildings on behalf of us who have severe dander-triggered asthma? We still have to shop at grocery stores for essential items like food and paper products and the dander in these stores will necessitate albuterol usage that would not otherwise be necessary if people's pet dogs and fake "service" animals were not allowed in stores! I've had to "waste" my albuterol nearly every time I enter one...
Hi Laurie, Thanks for commenting. We are of course aware of the growing number pets in public spaces and the negative impacts on those with severe dander-triggered asthma. We actively advocate to Congress to ensure that the needs of the asthma and allergy community are considered all the time, but especially in this time of crisis I know you are aware of the current proposed rule on Traveling by Air With Service Animals and we believe this is a good first step in recognizing the fraudulent...
On April 16, 2020, we updated this blog post to include the following: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a generic version of Proventil HFA, a commonly used albuterol inhaler , to help with the demand for albuterol. AAFA has also asked the FDA to address albuterol shortages due to COVID-19 .
CDC, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), state and local health departments, and other clinical and public health partners are investigating a multistate outbreak of severe pulmonary disease associated with e-cigarette product (devices, liquids, refill pods, and/or cartridges) use. This investigation is ongoing and has not identified a cause, but all reported cases have a history of using e-cigarette products. Food allergies and asthma can be tricky to manage, but my DD has not just survived -- she's thrived! In the fall, she'll be starting her freshman year at college at a school five hours away. I credit AAFA's AAFA's online asthma community and their Kids With Food Allergies community with helping me to help her negotiate life with her food allergies and asthma. Thank you, AAFA!
This is "my baby"! Yesterday she graduated from college. She happens to have asthma, allergies and food allergies. But she is much more than those conditions...she is: Smart Funny Passionate A Girl Scout for life A photographer A musician An artist Strong A Black Belt in TKD And ready to change the world! She went to college 3000 miles from home. After I stopped panicking, we made a plan and figured out all the logistics like where the nearest pharmacy was so she could get her asthma...
Tommy, my 8 year old, has both food allergies and OAS to a lot if things that cross-react with his pollen allergies. The difference with his OAS is that some times of year he can eat the foods just fine (like cucumber which cross-reacts with his ragweed allergy) but as soon as ragweed season comes it gets him itchy (especially under his arms). Then only if his ragweed allergy is bothering him or flared he will react to sunflower seed which stinks because he loves sunbutter and jelly...
Thank you for your continued advocacy on this. It does seem like we need to keep working on even more accommodations as I'm worried this still won't change the fact that more and more people are bringing animals onto planes, allowing them to sit on seats etc. Could we make any headway by looking at the root cause of the issue which is that the reason people want to bring their pets with them in the cabin is that they fear putting them in cargo? The main reasons they worry about the cargo...
I'm so sorry for the sudden loss of this beautiful child who held so much promise. As a person with uncontrolled asthma and life-threatening food and drug allergies, I've struggled all my life with trying to have my health challenges taken seriously by those around me. I support the work of AAFA and other organizations involved with the advocacy of asthma patients and their treatment. The recognition of asthma as a serious disease has come a long way. However, there's much work to do yet. I...
